The Toyota Highlander is a wonderfully versatile SUV that has been on the market for quite some time. This also means there are a wealth of options for used Toyota Highlander models. However, according to many owners, the third generation has the best models. This status is based on performance, features offered, and low owner complaints.

The third generation Toyota Highlander delivers impressive performance

The third generation Toyota Highlander starts with the 2014 model year and ends with the 2019 model year. What makes it one of the best generations of the Toyota SUV is that it has few complaints from customers in comparison to earlier generations of the SUV. For the most part, the Highlander 2014 through Toyota Highlander 2019 are considered excellent choices for used SUV buyers.

Regarding performance, the Toyota Highlander 2014 has a standard 2.7-liter inline-four engine, but most people prefer the 3.5-liter V6. The most popular trim is the Toyota Highlander XLE, which has a maximum output of 270 hp. By the end of the third generation, the SUV had a similar engine but became more powerful. The Highlander’s acceleration time remained mostly consistent during its third generation.

The Toyota Highlander 2015 isn’t one of the good ones

Every batch of apples has at least one that’s not as good as the others. The bad apple is the 2015 model for the Toyota Highlander third generation. While the SUV doesn’t have many serious issues, the Highlander 2015 has some malfunctions that render it less than desirable. According to Vehicle History, most of the issues with the Highlander 2015 are electrical.

Among the issues are faulty door actuators and a rear liftgate that malfunctions. In addition, there are problems with the infotainment system. However, there are also a few complaints about transmission delays when shifting gears. The Highlander 2015 also has a problem with excessive wind noise, which is more annoying than anything. These complaints are not super widespread, but this used Toyota Highlander perhaps shouldn’t be high on your list.

The Toyota Highlander 2017 got a facelift

Regarding used Toyota Highlander models, the 2017 is considered a great year. The Highlander 2017 received a much needed facelift. It has a much more sleek and modern look with a new front grille and headlights. The bumpers on the Highlander 2017 are also new and help make the SUV look like a brand-new machine.

In addition to the new look, this model Toyota Highlander got a new engine. It has a more powerful 3.5-liter V6 engine with a maximum output of 295 horsepower. Just as with other year models, the 2017 Toyota Highlander XLE is a top choice. The Highlander 2017 still isn’t the most exciting SUV of its class, but the changes were welcomed. This is considered one of the most reliable used Toyota Highlander models. Overall, the third generation Toyota Highlander could be a great choice for used SUV buyers.
