Why don’t people know what Stellantis is?
I’ve noticed that while obsessively talking about trucks and SUVs, many people over 50 don’t know who one popular automaker is. Don’t shoot the messenger, I’m just here to help you learn. I get confused looks and asked, ‘What is Stellantis?’ on a regular basis.
What is Stellantis?
Drum roll, please! Stellantis is a multinational automaker that formed in 2021 when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) merged with the PSA group. The PSA group was formed when Peugeot and Citroen merged in 1976.
You probably associate FCA with Jeep, Ram, and Dodge. However, now those brands fall under the massive European group.
According to Stellantis, there are 14 brands under its umbrella, including:
- Abarth
- Alfa Romeo
- Chrysler
- Citroen
- Dodge
- DS Automobiles
- Fiat
- Jeep
- Lancia
- Maserati
- Opel
- Peugeot
- Ram
- Vauxhall
The compact is the fourth-largest automaker based on the amount of vehicles produced annually. Its global headquarters is in a town near Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Also, there are operational headquarters in North America, Italy, and France. Plus, it has a well-established presence in Latin America, where the Ram Rampage is available.
Overall, it employs about 250,000 people with a presence in over 130 countries. There are running assembly centers in 30-plus countries. Through the end of 2024, the company had 248,234 employees in America.
The Stellantis name comes from the Latin verb, ‘stello’, which means ‘to brighten with stars.’ The name signifies the alignment of two successful automotive brands that plan to become leaders in the next year of mobility while upholding its founder’s rich history and value.
