The subcompact SUV segment is filled with excellent choices. As a result, some good ones are left unnoticed. For many people, the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer isn’t on the list of options. It hasn’t sold quite as well as other options recently. Are there any significant reasons why fewer people buy the Chevy Trailblazer than other models? For such an affordable SUV, it seems strange. Why isn’t the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer more popular?

Not many people are buying the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer

According to GoodCarBadCar, the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer isn’t selling well. Using statistics from the third quarter of 2022, it’s down nearly 8,000 units compared to Q3 2021. Furthermore, Chevy only sold 17,389 Trailblazers, which is far less than most other SUVs. For example, the Subaru Outback sold 28,063 units, and the Ford Bronco Sport sold 21,427. For other SUV classes, like midsize, the Ford Explorer led the way with 53,416 units out the door.

The 2022 Chevy Trailblazer isn’t ranked as one of the best overall subcompact SUVs. However, it isn’t one of the worst either. Why aren’t more people buying this affordable crossover? We think there is a lot to like about it, and it deserves to sell better than it has this year.

The base engine is weak and underwhelming

First, every version of the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer uses a turbocharged 1.2-liter three-cylinder engine. As a result, it makes 137 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. In short, it’s very underpowered, even compared to other subcompact SUVs. Not to mention, front-wheel drive is standard across the board. The only way to get all-wheel drive and a more potent engine is to pay extra for them on all trims besides Activ.

The upgraded engine is a turbocharged 1.3-liter three-cylinder, producing 155 hp and 174 lb-ft. Although it isn’t surprising for a subcompact SUV to have a weak engine, we wish more trims could get a better engine. Unfortunately, only Activ trim buyers get the upgrade standard, which is the “rugged” model. Otherwise, everyone will have to pay extra for the other engine and AWD.

2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer standard features are surprisingly plentiful

Like other vehicles starting below $25,000, we expect the Trailblazer to be cheaply made with few features. However, according to Edmunds, the LS base model has 17-inch alloy wheels, a Wi-Fi hotspot, a seven-inch touchscreen, a fold-flat front passenger seat, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a six-speaker audio system, forward collision mitigation, lane-keeping assist, and automatic high beams. Although it doesn’t rival a BMW X7, it’s rock solid for a $22,795 SUV.

Next, the most popular LT trim adds even more. For $24,995, owners get roof rails, LED foglights, heated mirrors, tinted rear windows, proximity keyless entry/ignition, cruise control, remote ignition, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats. We were surprised by how well-equipped the most affordable Trailblazer trims are. Why aren’t more people taking advantage of it?

Is the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer reliable?

According to Consumer Reports, the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer is reliable. It scored it perfectly for reliability, stating that it would be much more reliable than the average new car. We thought long-lasting capability would surely be why more people aren’t buying it. However, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case.

It’s worth noting that leasing is always a viable option, especially if you’re unsure of how long a vehicle will last. With leasing, you’ll be rid of it in a few years, and it’s doubtful that any car will experience significant problems quickly.

In conclusion, we think the 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer should be more popular. The subcompact SUV as a whole has become more common among buyers. In short, the segment provides car-like driving with SUV-like space. In most cases, it also means buyers pay much less for their new vehicle. The Chevy Trailblazer is all-that and more. Providing an affordable price, ample standard features, and surprising spaciousness inside.
