Ford is one of the most popular automakers in the world, and one of the cars that it’s most well-known for is the Mustang. Although classic car enthusiasts still prefer the old versions of the Mustang, Ford has continued updating the muscle car. Recently, it’s even introduced an electric Mustang known as the Mustang Mach-E. Despite the fact that the Ford Mustang Mach-E is an SUV, it’s actually still being outsold by its gas-powered cousin, the regular Mustang.

Here’s how the Ford Mustang Mach-E is selling right now

Ford Authority has the latest sales data for Ford’s vehicles, and it’s not looking good for the Mach-E. That being said, Ford’s EVs have been doing well. So far in the year, the company has sold just under 11,000 units of EVs. That’s a growth of 41% compared to the EV sales that Ford had last year.

The Mustang Mach-E, meanwhile, didn’t see a growth in sales. Year-to-date, Ford has only sold about 5,400 units of the electric SUV. In the same time period last year, the Detroit-based automaker sold over 6,700 units of the Mustang Mach-E. This means that, compared to last year, the Mustang Mach-E is selling about 20% worse.

In raw numbers, Ford sold about 1,300 fewer units this year than it did last year. That drop in sales can be explained by the fact that Ford went through some supply chain difficulties that affected its EVs. Those supply chain problems have eased in recent months, but it will take a while before the sales numbers reflect that.

The regular Ford Mustang is still doing much better

In comparison, the gas-powered Mustang is still doing well despite the fact that Ford has been heavily marketing the Mustang Mach-E. For the first quarter of last year, Ford sold about 14,000 units of the Mustang. In the first quarter of this year, the company sold about 14,700 units of the Mustang. That’s a difference of about 700 units, and in terms of percentage, it equals about 5%.

What this shows is that the Mustang seems to have a loyal fan base, and they’re buying the famous muscle car even though Ford has an electric SUV option available. It also shows that the gas-powered Mustang is not just selling better than the Mustang Mach-E, but that it’s been selling much better in the last year as well.

Currently, the Mustang is selling better than the Mach-E by about 9,300 units. That gap was smaller in 2022, but it was still a large gap of about 7,200 units. It will take time for the Mach-E to catch up to its gas-powered cousin, but it’ll probably happen sooner or later as long as Ford doesn’t discontinue the Mustang Mach-E.

Despite the weak sales, the Ford Mustang Mach-E probably isn’t a failure

Ford, like most other automakers, is transitioning towards an EV lineup, and the Mustang Mach-E was the company’s first big attempt at it. The Mach-E is not a perfect EV by any means, and the fact that the gas-powered Mustang is selling better isn’t an indicator that the Mach-E is a bad car. Instead, there are three main explanations for the Mustang Mach-E’s sales numbers.

The first obviously has to do with Ford’s supply chain issues, but the second and third reasons have to do with consumers. In addition to those issues, Not everyone is ready to go electric right now. It will take time before EVs start to dominate their gas-powered counterparts.

Finally, the Mustang has passionate fans, and many are likely committed to their muscle car being powered by V8 engines for the time being.
