The G-Wagen, or G-Wagon as we know it here in the US, is easily one of the coolest and most capable SUVs. It is a pop culture icon seen in music videos and song lyrics by artists such as American rapper Post Malone. The 400 plus horsepower twin-turbo V8 doesn’t hurt its reputation, either. Now, there is a new one set to release in 2022––and it’s been spied on roads in Germany.

If you aren’t familiar with the 4×4 Squared version of this member of the Mercedes G-Class, it’s a special edition of the G500 or G550 as we call it in the US. It is built with off-roading capability. Portal gear axles and much larger wheels and tires give this G-Wagon increased off-pavement prowess.

The Mercedes G-Class 4×4 G-Wagon

Introduced to the US as a 2017 model, the 4×4 “squared” is a G-Wagon on steroids. If you have around $250,000 to spend on an “Extreme-G” off-roading Mercedes truck, you will probably not be disappointed by this G-Class superstar. Who doesn’t want to drive around in a Mercedes monster truck, right?

In a review by The Drive, Will Sabel Courtney wrote that “not even a supercar can compete with this mighty off-roader in the attention-grabbing game.” It was released in all sorts of off-the-wall bright colors, and––while it boasts marvelous rock-crawling skills––is highly popular among posh celebrities such as the Kardashians. At least that’s the way The Drive’s review frames it.

The most capable Mercedes

With 18 inches of ground clearance, a robust 4×4 powertrain, and special wheels and axles, this G-Wagen is prepped for nearly any challenge. The specialized axles and wheels we speak of are paired with dual spring suspension. Plus, adjustable shock damper struts.

“I’d kill to have a chance to push this brute to its limits off-road…but good luck finding a trail with terrain that challenges it.”

Will Sabel Courtney | The Drive

The Drive‘s test vehicle sported a price tag of $232,425. The base price for the debut model was $225,395. This expensive extreme Mercedes SUV has a lot to show for itself in the power department, though. The Geländewagen––which is German for “terrain vehicle”–– employs a 4 liter twin-turbo V8 that generates 416 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

The 2022 G-Wagen in Germany

A few weeks ago, the 2022 G-Wagen (or Wagon) was spotted in Germany. This first sighting of the new 4×4 Squared model of this Mercedes off-roading SUV now has people talking––and guessing. What kind of power is this new SUV hiding under the hood? Surely no less than the twin-turbo V8 it already has.

So, will it have the increased engineering refinement of the AMG line? Will Mercedes-Benz give the G-Wagon Squared and its portal axle configuration an engine that has more power? According to Auto Evolution, this might mean up to a brawny 577 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. With a 0-60 of about 4.5 seconds. We’re hoping an option like this would be paired with some impressive brakes.

Will the new 4×4 Squared come to the US?

In the US, this 4×4 Squared Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon is known as the G550. However, in Europe, it is the Mercedes G550. It’s perhaps going to hit the European market in 2022. So the US won’t see it till probably at least 2023.
