Electric cars have brought rise to a new car metric that never felt all that important until now: range. Although electric cars have been on the scene for a while, electric SUVs and pickup trucks have been much slower to arrive. But now that they’re here, which electric SUV has the longest range?

The Tesla Model X is the electric SUV with the longest range

While there are electric cars like the Lucid Air and the Tesla Model S with a longer range than any electric SUVs, the Tesla Model X is the winner of the SUVs as it stands today.

According to Cars.com, the Tesla Model X has a max range of 351 miles on a full charge. The only electric vehicles to top that are the Tesla Model 3 Long Range with 358 miles, the Tesla Model S with 405, and the top dog, the Lucid Air Dream Edition R with 520 miles.

The only other electric SUVs in the top 10 longest range are the Rivian R1S with 316 miles of range and the Ford Mustang Mach-E with 314 miles.

Is the Tesla Model X worth it?

In pure Tesla fashion, the Tesla Model X is a strong performer in many metrics and a style icon. Whether we like it or not, the Tesla Model X is extremely interesting and unique in the SUV world.

For one thing, the Model X is an electric SUV. In case you haven’t noticed, this alone makes it pretty special. There are not many electric SUVs on the market yet. They are coming and coming quickly, but the pool is shallow for now. A second thing that makes the Model X impressive is the strange design choices, like falcon doors and bizarre settings that make it seem like more of an arcade than an SUV.

As a matter of fact, the electric motors and lithium-ion battery pack are probably the most normal aspects of the boisterous Model X. The Plaid model only needs less than 3 seconds to sprint from 0-60 mph, but it’s the standard variant that delivers the EPA-estimated 351 miles of driving range. According to Cars.com, as of January 2022, the previously available Long Range Plus variant and its 370-plus miles of range are not part of Tesla’s configurator.

How much can the Tesla Model X tow?

The Tesla Model X – when properly equipped – can tow up to 5,000 lbs. Considering most EVs aren’t much for towing, this is a pretty stout number. Tesla also “claims” that the Cybertruck will be able to haul up to 7,500 lbs. But just like gas-powered cars, towing kills an EV’s range. The Tesla Model X can only go 177 miles with a trailer in tow. *clearly, weight matters here*

Along with speed and weight, the electric SUV will also lose range when drivers use the amenities, of which there are many. Of course, HVAC can draw a bit of power, but with Tesla, you have to contend with the piles of silly and fun features that have nothing to do with driving. The truth is, EV is harder to calculate than gas mileage. Cars have become so much more sophisticated than they were only five years ago. And, they will continue to grow in sophistication, too. As for now, the Tesla Model X is the electric SUV with the longest range, but this will undoubtedly change.
