Few options remain for minivan shoppers in 2022. Many automakers have eliminated minivans from their lineup, and only a few remain. Additionally, some have taken the fuel-efficient route, leaving their offerings with only hybrid powertrains. That’s right, some minivans only come as hybrid models, but they offer much better fuel economy. Others don’t have hybrid offerings at all. If you’re interested in hybrid or gas-only models, you need to know which 2022 minivans are hybrid only.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna is a hybrid only

One of the most reliable minivans according to Car and Driver is the Toyota Sienna. You aren’t alone if you’re interested in a 2022 Toyota Sienna minivan. It remains one of the most popular models to buy year after year. However, in the last few years, it underwent a massive change. Now, the Sienna is hybrid only, upping its fuel economy and power in the process. The $35,775 Toyota minivan uses a 2.5-liter gasoline-powered four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors. Together, the group offers an output of 245 horsepower. As a result, the Sienna’s fuel economy is some of the best for a minivan or SUV of similar size. Its EPA-estimated fuel economy is 36 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway.

Besides the 2022 Toyota Sienna, no other minivan is a hybrid only. However, one rival offers a hybrid powertrain along with a standard gas-only engine. The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica is available with a hybrid or non-hybrid powertrain. One version uses a 3.6-liter V6 engine that produces 287 horsepower and averages 31 mpg combined. The hybrid version of the Pacifica is a bit different. It uses the same 3.6-liter V6 but pairs it with two electric motors, reducing the output to 260 horsepower. However, fuel economy is king, and the hybrid Pacifica gets an EPA-estimated 84 MPGe combined, with 33 miles of all-electric power available.

Which minivans are gas only?

Other minivans in the short lineup of models in the market don’t offer hybrid options at all. For example, the 2022 Honda Odyssey offers just a 280 horsepower V6 that’s good for an EPA-estimated 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. We’re still waiting for a hybrid powertrain to match the standard unit offered by Toyota. Until then, the Honda minivan is a far cry from the Sienna’s 36 mpg combined fuel economy.

Lastly, a non-hybrid minivan, or MPV as the automaker calls it, is the 2022 Kia Carnival. As one of the most interesting new models in the class, the Carnival has a lot to prove. Unfortunately, there is no hybrid powertrain, just a V6 with an eight-speed automatic transmission good for 290 horsepower. In addition, fuel economy suffers, as the Carnival averages 19 city and 26 highway mpg. Although it isn’t bad compared to other non-hybrid minivans and midsize SUVs, the Carnival certainly lacks compared to the Sienna or Pacifica hybrid models.

Are there any hybrid-only minivans?

In conclusion, there are four different minivans in the market today. However, only one of those options comes with a hybrid powertrain 100% of the time. The 2022 Toyota Sienna is only sold as a hybrid, while one other offers an optional hybrid setup. The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica usually comes with a potent V6 gas-only option along with one paired with electric motors. Lastly, the Kia Carnival and Honda Odyssey are non-hybrid only. Although excellent options for many reasons, fuel economy pales in comparison to other minivan models.
