We all know that Ford’s F-150 trucks are the world’s best-selling truck. It’s quite an achievement for quite a truck. Ford is leading the truck charge in 2022 with three trucks on sale now. Though it sells hundreds of thousands of F-150s, Ford doesn’t sell the most trucks. So, what manufacturer sells the most trucks?

General Motors sells more trucks than any other manufacturer

General Motors comes in at No. 1 on the list. It sells an enormous amount of trucks, too, from its Chevrolet and GMC brands, in both full size and mid-size trucks. GM sells the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado, as well as the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon and Hummer EV Pickups.

General Motors sold almost 69,000 Colorado middleweight trucks so far this year, as well as 21,000 Canyons, according to sales tracker CarSalesBase. When you add the 379,000 Silverados, 169,000 GMC Sierras, and the 782 Hummers it has sold during the first three quarters of 2022, as well as middleweights, and GM has sold 639,000 trucks so far in 2022.

Of course, Ford has booked several thousand reservations for its new F-150 Lightning electric truck, and it’s ramping up manufacturing to deliver even more in 2023.

Ford leads the charge with three great-selling pickups; the new kid on the block, the Ford Maverick, the middleweight Ranger, and the best-selling Ford F-150. For several decades, the F-150 has been an amazing sales success.

Overall, according to CarSalesBase, which tracks vehicle sales, Ford still leads the pack. It sold 467,000 F-series trucks this year. But, when you add in the 52,000 Mavericks and 46,000 Rangers, Ford has sold about 565,000 trucks this year. Chevy and GMC, too, are taking reservations for their new EV trucks, the Sierra EV and the Silverado EV.

Stellantis, which owns Ram and Jeep, is also a huge player in the truck world. Ram sold 363,000 Ram 1500 trucks this year. However, if you add in the sister brand Jeep with its super-successful Gladiator truck, of which it sold 60,000 versions this year, Stellantis sold 423,000 trucks. Ram is planning a new EV truck, too, but we won’t see that truck until January 2023.

What is the best-selling midsize truck?

So far in 2022, Toyota has sold about 176,000 Tacoma trucks. That’s a bit of a surprise to many because the midsize truck market is one of the most competitive and one of the most dynamic. The Tacoma, though, hasn’t changed markedly since 2015, while Nissan, Jeep, Ford, and Rivian have launched newer midsize trucks.

Many are expecting to see a new Toyota Tacoma launch in 2023 for the 2024 model year. We’re not sure what to expect from Toyota, but the new truck could be larger and offer hybrid power, if not a full-electric version.
