What Is Toyota’s Worst-Selling SUV?

Toyota has a best-selling vehicle in just about every class where it competes. Toyota has an impressive lineup of sedans, but the company’s SUVs are stealing the show. However, not all Toyotas rank toward the top. As you shop around, you might wonder: what is Toyota’s worst-selling SUV?

Toyota’s worst-selling SUV isn’t all that surprising

You may already know that the RAV4 is Toyota’s best-selling SUV of the year. But on the opposite end of the spectrum, there’s the Toyota Sequoia. The Sequoia is a large SUV that competes in the same realm as the Chevy Tahoe and Ford Expedition. And when we say “compete,” that’s putting nicely.

According to GoodCarBadCar, Chevy sold 23,121 Tahoes while Ford sold 19,401 Expeditions by the end of Q3 2020. During the same period, Toyota only pushed 2,205 Sequoias. This figure makes the Sequoia the worst-selling large SUV in the class. Toyota’s Sequoia has seen a steady decline since 2005. Also, according to GoodCarBadCar, Toyota has only sold 4,733 Sequoias at this point.

The 2020 Sequoia has some charming elements, but the reviews for this SUV aren’t all that positive. Toyota hasn’t redesigned the Sequoia since 2008. Because the Sequoia has had the same look for a while, it’s not the best way to show off that you’ve bought a brand-new vehicle. 

Most of the Sequoia’s drawbacks relate to its performance. As Consumer Reports highlights, this Toyota has a real-world fuel economy of 15 overall. This rating is OK for the class, but it’s still not that great. Additionally, it’s ride-quality isn’t the most comfortable. CR reviewers gave the Sequoia demerits for its lack of agility and stiffness.

“The ride is truck-like with rubbery jiggles and the body tends to toss back and forth on rough roads. On the highway, small but constant pitching motions make it feel unsettled. While the handling is secure, the Sequoia’s size makes it feel ponderous. It leans heavily in corners, and the steering is light and offers little feedback.”

Even though the Sequoia has some notable flaws, it’s not a lost cause. The Sequoia is still a part of Toyota’s current lineup, and the 2021 version is already hitting the streets. Furthermore, CR still considers it as one of the best large SUVs of 2020.

CR gave the 2020 Sequoia a near-perfect predicted reliability score. The organization also gave the Sequoia a good ranking for predicted owner satisfaction. The Sequoia is a capable off-roader, and the new-for-2020 TRD trim takes the SUV’s performance to the next level.

The Sequoia is a gas-guzzler, but it simultaneously earns praise for its power. This SUV has a 381-hp, 5.7-liter V8 engine linked to a six-speed automatic. It can tow up to 7,400 pounds and even moves quickly hitched to a 5,000-pound trailer, as CR notes.

While some may consider the Sequoia’s cabin outdated, the bright side is that it offers comfortable space for up to eight people. Toyota also made the 2020 model more compelling with an updated infotainment system that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The 2020 model comes with many advanced safety features too.
