It’s not surprising to hear that a Ford model is the most popular option. The Ford F-150 has been the most popular selling truck for decades. Since its introduction in 2014, the Ford Transit has climbed the ranks as the most popular cargo van, but why?

Why is the 2020 Ford Transit the best cargo van?

According to AutoTrader, the Ford Transit outsells its number one rival, the Mercedes Sprinter, by about 4 to 1 units. That’s a lot. Also, it’s surprising that the Ram ProMaster isn’t the second most popular option.

For 2020 the Ford Transit gained a few crucial upgrades to make it stack up even better against the competition. They removed the 3.7-liter V6 engine with 275 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque to replace it with a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. So, that’s a considerable upgrade.

Ford brought a new 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine to replace the old 3.2-liter 5-cylinder diesel engine. This increases the hp from 185 to 211 and increases the lb-ft of torque from 350 to 369. All-new engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission to enhance the fuel economy.

The Ford Transit Cargo van can carry a payload of up to 7,500 lb when properly equipped. It can also carry a payload of 4,660 lb! Wow, that’s a lot. Plus, it got all-wheel drive for 2020, meaning it’s better for adventuring.

But is the 2020 Ford Transit reliable?

Consumer Reports gave the 2020 Ford Transit a predicted reliability rating of 3 out of 5. There have also been four recalls for the 2020 model. This is a little concerning, but the recalls are for the side window airbags, rearview mirror, and the seat belt retractors, so at least they weren’t for mechanical issues.

The predicted reliability rating is based on a questionnaire sent to owners and problems from previous model years. But according to CarComplaints, the 2015 Ford Transit has the most problems reported for things like AC issues and engine problems. However, the 2019 Ford Transit has 0 problems reported. This could mean that the Ford Transit is becoming more reliable.

2020 Ford Transit features

The 2020 Ford Transit has a mid-cycle refresh. It got a new grille and headlights for a more confident look. The interior received new colors, improved surface materials, better grab handles, and the driver and passenger seats now swivel.

In terms of tech, the Ford Transit van now has a power sliding cargo door and standard Wi-fi capability for up to 10 devices. The 4-inch infotainment center can be upgraded to have an 8-inch screen and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Plus, the 4.2-inch digital cluster display provides crucial information for the driver.

The van has more durable fabrics and is focused on fitting the needs of those wanting a recreational vehicle for camping and traveling. Plus, the Ford Transit is safer, with standard safety features such as automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assistance, and automatic high-beams.
