There’s no denying it, EV cars are likely the future of the automotive industry. And there is no greater indication of that than Ford offering a fully electric pickup truck. The Ford F-150 Lightning is an electric truck offered by a major brand. Not only that, but the F-150 has long been a flagship model for the Blue Oval. So, what exactly does the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning mean for the future of electric vehicles?

What is the Ford F-150 Lightning?

The 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning is the electric version of Ford’s full-size truck. The F-150 has long been one of the most popular full-size trucks in the United States. It consistently falls at the top of many buyer lists. But now, Ford has brought its pickup into the future by offering an EV powertrain. And the results are pretty impressive, to say the least.

In terms of power, when properly equipped, the 2022 Ford Lightning makes over 560 horsepower. And that’s quite a bit of power output for a truck. Ford has also given this full-size EV truck a potential range of 320 miles. So although it’s an electric truck, it can be practical for things like long-distance driving. Or, just your weekly trip to the grocery store.

How expensive is the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning?

When it comes to cost, the Ford F-150 Lightning has a starting price of $39,974. Unfortunately, that means the Lightning has experienced a price jump from the time that it was introduced. At the same time, buying Ford’s electric truck feels impossible right now. Because of demand, the Blue Oval was forced to close orders.

The 2022 F-150 Lightning can climb well over $40k. If you want an F-150 Lightning Platinum, you will be paying a starting MSRP of $90,874. Unfortunately, that is a reflection of what pickup trucks have become. They are no longer simple tools but luxury status symbols. At least if you buy one of the upper trims of a pickup.

Why is Ford’s electric truck important for EVs?

The 2022 F-150 Lightning is not the first EV or even the first electric truck, but it is important. For a brand to take its flagship truck and give it an electric powertrain shows how seriously Ford is taking electrification. Sure, there are folks out there who are mad that Ford made an EV F-150. But it can do plenty of things a normal F-150 can’t. Like, powering your house and keeping you from having to stop at the gas station.

Plus, when properly equipped, the F-150 Lightning has a 0-60 mph time of about four seconds. And that is seriously impressive. According to Car and Driver, the payload capacity of this electric truck is maxed out at 2,000 pounds. But it can also tow up to 10,000 lbs, depending on which configuration you buy. Those numbers should be enough for most needs.

Can you buy Ford’s electric truck?

If you want to buy an EV truck, the 2022 Ford F-150 Lightning might be a hard one to get. You can no longer order one from Ford, so you must look to the used market. And folks are certainly charging a premium for this full-size pickup truck.

Hopefully, in the coming years, it will be easier to buy an F-150 Lightning. That way, more shoppers can experience the performance of an electric truck.
