Every once in a while, a criminal shows up in a police chase with a car capable of leaving police vehicles in the dust. But even a supercharged jungle cat like a stolen Jaguar F-TYPE isn’t likely to get away from the watchful gaze of a helicopter. A creative, albeit risky, bit of driving did manage to get the driver of the stolen Jag away from pursuing police and in the wind.

A police chase ended when a driver in a stolen Jaguar F-TYPE ditched his car and disappeared without a trace

A video of a police chase shows a black, pre-facelift Jaguar F-TYPE running from police in Los Angeles, California. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) says the stolen Jaguar hit speeds of up to 130 mph as it ran from law enforcement, not ridiculous for the big cat.

The car thief, who was also wanted for assault with a deadly weapon, ran red lights and drove against the flow of traffic during his attempt to flee. Eventually, police called off the chase in the interest of safety. But that didn’t mean the wayward car thief wasn’t still being tracked by a helicopter.

Then the driver pulled off something you’d expect to see in a Grand Theft Auto game. He pulled the Jaguar F-TYPE under a huge overpass with 10 lanes and center rails. The helicopter continued to track the Jaguar coupe as it passed under the highway. Moments later, the F-TYPE emerged, this time at a crawling pace.

Eventually, the video shows a white Dodge Charger in full police livery overtaking the Jaguar as it slowly crept toward a street light post. The officer ran up to the Jaguar and flung its driver-side door open. Nothing. No car thief. He had bailed out when the helicopter lost visual of the F-TYPE.

In this one instance, the move seemed to work. According to CBS News, the police hadn’t announced any arrests after the car thief ditched the F-TYPE during the chase. However, bailing out of the car, like stealing a car and running from the police in the first place, was an extremely risky move. It very easily could have ended in a violent altercation with the LAPD and an arrest.
