Distracted driving goes beyond the vapid space cadet still sitting there as a green light beckons, glued to a video on TikTok. It’s a lethal presence on public roads, killing thousands every year. In yet another disturbing example of the dangers of distracted driving, a truck driver crashed into a car with its emergency flashers. Not because he was glancing down at a phone, mind you. Instead, the pickup truck driver was preoccupied with an iPad at 80 mph.

If ever you needed an example of what not to do, don’t be this iPad-using truck driver who hit a car with its flashers on

According to the NHTSA, 3,275 people lost their lives on American roads due to distracted driving in 2023. It’s a serious safety concern, especially when the distracted driver is at the helm of a huge, heavy truck. Worse yet, this example of an unfocused truck driver was absorbed by an iPad when he slammed into a car with its flashers activated. You read that right. An iPad, not a phone.

It’s troubling, really. Beyond the fact that his distraction of choice is a massive tablet, he only glances up at the road a handful of times. It’s a darkened stretch of highway. Practically deserted. But the only vehicle ahead was using its emergency flashers to signal that it was having an issue.

As you might imagine, the flashing indicators were visible from a great distance. And yet, the pickup truck driver and his wayward attention didn’t notice a thing. He kept on his path, his speed slowly dropping from 80 mph to around 73. However, by the time he looked up once more, it was too late. He made a vain attempt to avoid the SUV, slamming into it at around 73 mph.

Here are some fast numbers for you. A 5,631-lb Ford F-150 requires around 185 feet to stop from 70 mph. And that’s only if the driver is, you know, paying attention. Phones down, folks. Or in this case, huge tablets. Check out the video below!
