The 2024 Volvo EX90 is coming. And as an electric SUV, it will deliver on luxury, design, and practicality. But one feature, in particular, might lead to some pretty expensive repairs. And that is something that Volvo is calling the “Thor’s Hammer”  headlights. While these headlights are extremely cool, they are also complicated. So if you get in an accident with front-end damage, replacing the lights of the EX90 won’t be as easy as just going to the AutoZone.

What is the Volvo EX90?

The 2024 Volvo EX90 is a new electric SUV from the Swedish car brand. It is Volvo’s first purpose-built EV, which means that it is entirely designed to handle an electric powertrain. Set to arrive in 2024, it’s not going to be cheap. But, even the pre-production model seems to be stuffed with luxury features and premium materials.

One of the more interesting things about the EX90 is actually on the exterior. And that is its headlights. The headlights are shielded by the daytime running lights, and you can see them in action in the video above.

This feature is undoubtedly cool, but it does add some complexity. And, in the case of an accident that damages the front end, there’s no way those lights are going to be cheap to replace.

At the same time, the person who is in a position to purchase this luxury SUV probably has the funds to keep up on repairs. And the Thor’s Hammer lights are kind of like the modern equivalent of pop-up headlights. Something that used to be a staple in the automotive industry.

An electric Volvo SUV is coming

The 2024 Volvo EX90 should arrive at some point next year. And once it does, there will be a new luxury EV on the market. According to Car and Driver, it will offer up to 496 horsepower, and the estimated range is about 300 miles.

Pricing is expected to be somewhere around $80,000, but Volvo has not confirmed specifics yet. Eventually, Volvo is hoping to sell only electric vehicles. And that will likely go into effect in 2030. So far, the EX90 will be the first of these dedicated EVs.

This SUV is going to be launched with a dual-motor powertrain. And that means that there will be power going to all four wheels. Knowing Volvo, there will likely be some kind of performance variant. Allowing folks to get an EV that offers more power.

When will the 2024 Volvo EX90 go on sale?

Earlier this year, Volvo revealed a pre-production model of the EX90. So, it’s not quite ready for production yet. But automotive journalist Doug DeMuro did have a chance to check out the reveal in his video below.

Volvo is certainly going for a modern and minimalist design with this SUV. Gone are things like physical buttons to control the HVAC. The brand has also stated that this will be the safest Volvo yet. And that should make it ideal for being a family vehicle if you are in search of something high-end.
