It doesn’t get any bigger than VW and cars like Beetle and Volkswagen T2 Camper van when it comes to cult followings. Even with its controversial past, VW’s classic cars are highly coveted among enthusiasts. Despite Volkswagen’s German roots, vehicles like the iconic Volkswagen Beetle and VW Bus have become deeply ingrained in American car culture.

One of the reasons why classic Volkswagen cars are so popular is because they are relatively inexpensive, have significant aftermarket support, and their styling strikes a nostalgic chord in the hearts and minds of those who lived through the 60s or are fans of the culture from that era. This is why products based on classic Volkswagen cars tend to attract many eyeballs and the wallets attached to them.

Lego is looking to capitalize on this phenomenon with their recently released set based on the Volkswagen T2 Camper van.

What is the Volkswagen T2 Camper Van?

The Volkswagen T2 Camper Van is a variant of the Volkswagen T2 Bus originally released in the 1960s. The Volkswagen T2 is a platform that VW was able to mold to fit several different uses cases. However, it is most known for the passenger-carrying variants and gave rise to the massive popularity of the VW Bus.

The “Camper” version of the Volkswagen T2 is designed to take a small group of people on a trip to the great outdoors by providing them with the amenities that campers were looking for in a vehicle back in the 60s. The T2 Camper Van featured a roof that could “pop up” and convert into a tent. The van featured a folding bed, a fold-out table for meals, and even a space for a mini-refrigerator.

They may seem like simple pleasures, but they go a long way!

Designing Lego Volkswagen T2 Camper Van set

Lego Volkswagen T2 Camper Van set is purely aimed at either hardcore Volkswagen fans or nostalgic for the “counter-culture” lifestyle of the 60s and 70s. One of the lead designers for this Lego set actually owns a T2 Camper van himself, so this project hit “close to home for him.

Not surprisingly, he and his team wanted to make sure they captured as much of the essence of the actual van as possible in this Lego set. Some of the details that the design team was able to capture are quite remarkable.

Naturally, they made sure to include the iconic pop-up roof tent within the Lego set. The tent even appears to be made from similar canvas material found in the real vehicle. From there, the design team re-purposed a mechanism used from an old 80s Lego set to re-create the sliding door located on the original second-generation T2 Camper Van.

Opening that sliding door reveals the colorful interior, including the fold-out bed, fold-out table, a tea kettle stove, and a mini-fridge.

Furthermore, the designers pushed to ensure that the fabled Volkswagen engine was featured in the set and can be easily removed anytime the user wants to admire it.

Anyone looking to get that VW nostalgia fix can pick up the Volkswagen T2 Camper Van set right now. Though, unfortunately, it is not big enough to sleep in.
