It’s no secret that the Tesla Model Y can drive itself. Robotaxi software-equipped Model Ys are currently cruising the streets in Austin, Texas, delivering passengers without the need for a driver. It’s that kind of self-driving functionality that allowed a Model Y to deliver itself over 15 miles from Giga Texas to a new owner on South Lamar Boulevard.

Tesla recorded a video of a Model Y delivering itself to a customer using ‘Robotaxi software’

It’s one thing to say that a car will drive itself right out of the factory and to a buyer. It’s another thing entirely when you can capture it delivering itself on camera. Tesla sold a new Model Y to a customer at the Fifteen15 apartment complex on South Lamar Boulevard in Austin, Texas. But rather than the new buyer picking up their new Model Y at a showroom, Tesla sent the EV SUV out onto Texas roads to deliver itself.

The Model Y, optioned in $2,000 Quicksilver paintwork, pulled through a shuttered door at Giga Texas before heading out onto the road. With a Cybertruck camera car escort driving alongside it, the Model Y drove on the busy Texas highway for miles before exiting and cruising out onto surface streets and winding roads.

The drive from Tesla Giga Texas pitted the Model Y against around 16 miles of driving. With daytime traffic conditions, it didn’t take more than around 30 minutes to reach the South Austin apartment complex. But Tesla was quick to put a disclaimer saying it wasn’t production FSD that guided the car to its owner, but rather the same Robotaxi setup that the brand is currently operating in Central Texas.

“Vehicle operating Robotaxi software. Equipped with FSD (Supervised) upon delivery.” Both functions will drive without human hands on the wheel. However, Tesla’s $8,000 FSD suite requires human supervision to operate. No sitting in the back and doom scrolling like you might in a Robotaxi.
