People are silly creatures. Nearly half of men think they could land a plane in an emergency when they can hardly drive. And this guy thought turning his Jeep Wrangler into a submarine was the right move for losing the police. Like the average man attempting to land a plane, it didn’t go well.

Police chased a Perth, Australia, man in his red Jeep Wrangler until he plunged off the pier into the Swan River

Maybe he thought the Jeep Wrangler TJ could swim. Or float. Whatever he thought, he was wrong. A video captured the moment that a Perth man drove his bright-red off-roader off a pier into a river to lose his police pursuers.

According to 7NEWS in Australia, the plunge was part of an escape attempt following an hours-long standoff between the man and local police. The man reportedly negotiated with law enforcement for two hours before making a run for it by reversing down the Claremont jetty. He then put the Jeep Wrangler back into drive, and floored it. The move sent it crashing into the Swan River, right beside a police boat.

Needless to say, Aquaman didn’t get far. He climbed onto the Wrangler, now upside down and sinking. Police were in no rush. They talked to the man as he sat atop the upside-down and drowning Wrangler. Eventually, the man leapt back into the water in an attempt to get away. Moments later, police pulled the man out of the water and transported him to the hospital under guard.

Now, dear reader, a Jeep Wrangler TJ can do a lot. One of the second-gen workhorses with the 4.0L inline-six, four-wheel drive, locking differential options, and a five-speed in the middle, the little TJ has long since established itself as an off-roader, if not a crawler waiting to happen.

But, and it’s a big but, it can’t float. It also can’t plunge into a body of water à la James Bond in a submersible Lotus Esprit. Perhaps this guy played a bit too much Grand Theft Auto before hitting the road in his bright-red TJ.
