With gas prices misbehaving on a daily basis, the allure of a good used hybrid sedan might be strong. The prospect of plugging in your family car overnight and using that juice to commute is comforting. Furthermore, a plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) can allow drivers the flexibility of gassing up and hitting the open road without range anxiety. Also, you can save money on the initial purchase if you look at a used car like these 2017 models instead of a new car. So if you’re in the market, here are some used hybrid sedans with the best fuel economy.

  • Toyota Prius
  • Ford C-Max
  • Hyundai Ioniq
  • Kia Niro
  • Lexus CT 200h
  • Ford Fusion
  • Hyundai Sonata
  • Toyota Camry
  • Lexus ES
  • Lincoln MKZ

When we’re talking about a 2017 model year Prius, we’re actually talking about four different cars. First, consumers can opt for the original Toyota Prius, the namesake around which all the other famed little sedans are based. The Prius has a staggering fuel economy figure of 53 mpg overall, a truly impressive feat. Moving away from the original, shoppers can buy a Prius Prime, an owner-reported 70 mpg family car with the ability to cover 23 miles on electric drive only.

In addition to the Prius and Prius Prime, Toyota offered the C and V models. The Prius C is smaller than the flagship Prius, and the Prius V is larger. Further, both cars are economical, with the C achieving 52 mpg and the V model achieving 40 mpg. Both figures are owner-reported.

Is Ford C-Max a good car?

The Ford C-Max Energi PHEV and conventional hybrid managed to accomplish 37 mpg in Consumer Reports testing. Also, customers won’t have to trade economy for practicality, as the C-Max provides excellent visibility and a quiet cabin, although cramped due to a large battery pack.

Is Hyundai Ioniq a better hybrid sedan than Toyota Prius?

The 2017 Hyundai Ioniq tied the similarly aged Toyota Prius in fuel economy, so the Ioniq is a good alternative to the Toyota hybrid. However, due to how Hyundai engineered the Ioniq, the cars required great distances to brake. Also, the dual-clutch automatic transmission suffers from sluggish performance. However, the Ioniq has generous storage capacity to complement the exceptional fuel economy.

Is the Kia Niro a good buy for hybrid sedan customers?

The 2017 Kia Niro looks quite different from the new Niro and its dramatic aero blades. However, the 2017 model is still a great purchase for sedan shoppers. Although the Niro seems to be more hatchback than a sedan, it still comfortably seats five. The Kia Niro accomplished a respectable 43 mpg in testing, and due to the battery pack placement, has a flat cargo area with the seats folded.

Regardless of which hybrid you pick, you’ll be glad you did

Picking a good hybrid sedan may seem like a difficult decision, but having options is a good problem to have. Consumer Reports suggests that these 2017 models are excellent choices for consumers who want an affordable car that will save them money at the pump. Don’t be scared by the age of the cars, they can still hold up with more modern cars without breaking the bank. Scroll down to read more about some of the best gas-sippers with over 40mpg.
