The Honda Pilot has been around for nearly 20 years. It is Honda’s largest SUV, and there is a new model on the way. But, buying a new vehicle is not for everyone. Especially with the rising cost of modern SUVs, and because of that, many shoppers look to the used market. So, in terms of a used Honda Pilot, which models are best to buy, and which should you probably avoid?

Which used Honda Pilot is right for you?

There are currently three generations of the Pilot SUV, and if you aren’t on too tight of a budget, the third generation makes for a good option. The third generation of the Honda Pilot was introduced in 2016, and it is a pretty solid vehicle.

When compared to the older models of the Pilot, models after 2016 offer more driver assistance features. And it has a fairly stylish and sleek design. This generation of Pilot also boasts a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 280 horsepower. Better yet, you can opt for all-wheel drive, which is ideal for winter climates, or you just want an SUV with more capability.

According to AutoTrader, in 2017, Honda made Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard for this SUV. Prices of the 2017 Pilot range from around $25,000 to $30,000, depending on mileage. But, with the level of features this vehicle offers, that is a good value.

What is the worst year of the Honda Pilot?

By far, one of the worst years for the Honda Pilot was the 2003 model. Common issues included things like transmission failure. This is especially problematic because fixing a transmission is not cheap. And it can take your vehicle out of commission for some time.

In addition to transmission problems, some owners complained about issues with the brakes. Apparently, the Pilot was prone to warped brake rotors. And while not as expensive to fix as a transmission, it can still be annoying to have to fix.

Should you buy a used Pilot SUV?

If you are in the market for a three-row SUV, the Honda Pilot is a good option to consider. It has been around for some time, so there are plenty of models available. Although the third generation Pilot has the best mix of modern features, even the second generation is a good buy. So long as you ensure proper maintenance and care has been done.

Buying a used vehicle always poses a slight risk. So, when buying a used Honda Pilot SUV, make sure you have a mechanic familiar with Honda models to look it over. That way, you can buy with additional confidence.

Is this SUV getting a new generation?

Honda did give the Pilot a facelift in 2019, but for 2023, this SUV will be entering its fourth generation. The 2023 Pilot should arrive at some point this fall, and it will undoubtedly be a popular addition to Honda’s lineup. Especially for those who need three rows of seating.

But, if buying a new Pilot is not right for you, there is always the used market.
