Newer doesn’t always mean better, and for shoppers on a budget, opting for a used vehicle is often an excellent way to save cash while still getting a good car. However, it’s reasonable to want some reassurance the vehicle is reliable. If you’re looking for an affordable and dependable used SUV, the 2014 Toyota Highlander is an excellent choice. Here’s what you can expect from this midsize crossover.

Why the 2014 Toyota Highlander is such a good option

The 2014 Toyota Highlander made Consumer Reports‘ “Best Used Cars for $15,000 to $20,000” list. This SUV ranges from $15,725 to $22,050 and offers many impressive features and perks despite its age.

In particular, CR’s reviewers note the Highlander’s excellent fuel economy. It gets approximately 20 mpg combined, notable for the segment, and offers the benefit of even more savings over time.

The Highlander also excels in reliability and owner satisfaction, two areas that anyone shopping for a used vehicle will likely be concerned with. Consumer Reports gives the Highlander a predicted reliability rating of 5 out of 5 and an owner satisfaction rating of 4 out of 5. The Highlander also handles well, offers “minivanlike” space in the second row, and features a large display with easy-to-use controls.

Specs and features of the 2014 Toyota Highlander

Most 2014 Toyota Highlander SUVs have a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 270 hp. Although the base model comes with a 2.7-liter four-cylinder that makes 185 hp, Consumer Reports states this model will be harder to find because the V6 was more popular. A 3.5-liter V6 hybrid that makes 280 hp is also available.

Depending upon the configuration, the Highlander can seat either seven or eight people. It comes with plenty of convenience features, including cruise control and a rearview camera. If you opt for a higher-level trim such as the XLE, you’ll get additional features like a leather-wrapped steering wheel, electric power steering, and a universal remote transmitter.

The Highlander also boasts an abundance of advanced safety features. They include stability control, emergency braking assist, daytime running lights, and dusk-sensing headlights. However, you’ll get advanced electronic safety features only if you choose an upper-trim Limited model.

Does this SUV have any cons?

Although the 2014 Toyota Highlander is an excellent choice, it’s important to know any potential downsides before committing. Consumer Reports observes this SUV’s cabin is somewhat less plush than other model years and has a fair amount of interior noise.

Additionally, though the cabin offers plenty of legroom and headroom, test drivers found the third row cramped for adults. This means if you plan to drive with upward of six adults in the vehicle regularly, you might be better off opting for an alternative with slightly more space.

All in all, though, Consumer Reports has very few negative things to say about the Highlander. Reviewers state this SUV “combines the practicality of an SUV with the refinement of a good sedan.” While the cabin may not be quite as upscale as other options, the Highlander offers a pleasant ride with smooth shifts and well-weighted steering.

Opting for a used vehicle is an excellent way to get the features you want at a more affordable price point. If you’ve been looking for an SUV that offers dependability, good fuel economy, and a comfortable ride, the 2014 Toyota Highlander is worth your consideration.
