Owners of the new 2026 Nissan LEAF are being given an urgent safety warning: park your car outside immediately, do not charge it, and do not drive it. The advice comes after a major recall was issued over a serious defect in the electric vehicle’s high voltage battery that could cause it to catch fire, even when stationary.
What is the Problem with the 2026 Nissan LEAF?
The recall, identified under campaign number 26V188000 by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, affects certain 2026 models of the popular electric car. According to the official notice filed by Nissan North America, the high voltage battery may have sustained internal damage. This fault can lead to a short circuit within a battery module, creating a significant risk of a fire. This danger is there regardless of whether the vehicle is being driven, is parked, or is connected to a charger.

Urgent Safety Instructions for Owners
Given the severity of the potential fire risk, Nissan and the NHTSA have issued clear and immediate instructions for all affected owners. It is vital that these steps are followed without delay to ensure personal safety and protect property.
Park your vehicle outside: Move your car to an open space, a safe distance away from any buildings, such as your home or garage, and other vehicles.
Do not drive the vehicle: The official ‘Park It’ warning indicates the risk is too high to operate the vehicle under any circumstances.
Do not attempt to charge the vehicle: Plugging the car in could increase the likelihood of a short circuit and fire.
How Nissan Plans to Resolve the Defect
Nissan has confirmed it will rectify the problem free of charge for all affected customers. The remedy involves dealers inspecting the high voltage battery and replacing either the faulty battery modules or the entire battery pack as necessary.
The company is organising a two-stage notification process. An initial letter informing owners of the safety risk is scheduled to be sent out from 17 April 2026. A second letter will follow once the final repair solution and parts are available, which is currently anticipated for July 2026.
Is Your Nissan LEAF Included in the Recall?
If you own a 2026 Nissan LEAF, you can check if your specific car is affected by visiting the NHTSA recall website and entering your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number. This information became searchable on 27 March 2026.
Alternatively, owners can contact Nissan’s customer service centre directly on 800-647-7261. You should quote Nissan’s internal recall number, R25F1, when you call to get the most accurate information.
The risk of a battery fire is a serious concern. For now, the most important action for any 2026 LEAF owner is to heed the advice: park it outside, leave it unplugged, and await further instructions from Nissan. Your safety, and the safety of those around you, may depend on it.
