The Toyota Camry is an accomplished car that still gives us much to talk about, even long after it’s new. As you’re shopping for a used Camry, you’ll see that each model year has its accolades. And if your main priorities are affordability and dependability, U.S. News explicitly recommends the 2016 model.

Like us, experts at U.S. News commend the Camry as a well-rounded, dependable car. As a new model, U.S. News named the 2016 Camry as its best midsize car for the money. The organization also recognized this Camry as the best-used vehicle for teens and one of the best-used cars under $15K.

“The Camry rates highly for safety and reliability, and its comfortable ride, roomy seating, and easy-to-use features make it pleasant to drive. While there are sportier and more fuel-efficient cars in this class, none can match the Camry’s mix of practicality and value.”

U.S. News

The 2016 Camry comes in two flavors

As with most midsize cars, the Camry is more about comfort, not sportiness. Nevertheless, the Camry is enjoyable to drive and offers sufficient power. The Camry’s standard engine is a 178-horsepower, 2.5-liter 4-cylinder. This four-cylinder is gentle and is the more fuel-efficient choice. But if fuel economy is your top priority, you will want to consider the hybridized version.

You will want to shop for the XLE and XSE trims for a quicker experience in the Camry. These trims levels are available with a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 268-hp. U.S. News also praises the Camry for its standard, smooth-shifting six-speed automatic.

Interior elements

U.S. News appreciates the Camry’s high-quality cabin and available safety features in addition to its pleasant driving experience. The base LE trim is pretty simple, but it provides what you need. It comes with a rearview camera, a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, and Siri Eyes Free. The sE trim is next up if you would like a more upscale-looking cabin.

For the most equipment, you’ll want to look for XSE models that offer a long list of amenities, including a navigation system and app suite tech. The XSE also has active safety features such as blind-spot monitoring and automatic emergency braking.

Safety and reliability ratings

The 2016 Camry earned superior safety and reliability ratings. The NHTSA gave it a five-star crash-test safety rating. Additionally, the IIHS named the Camry a Top Safety Pick+ award, its highest honor.

The Camry’s top safety scores contributed to its excellent reliability ratings. J.D. Power and Consumer Reports recognized the Camry for being one of the most dependable vehicles in its class. While the Camry has proved to be a reliable car, there are two NHTSA safety recall actions on it. One had to do with a potential issue with the Camry’s airbags, the other related to its equipment label. Make sure to address these recalls actions with your auto dealer.
