There are a lot of benefits to owning a pickup truck. You never have to beg your neighbors to help you haul loads, bigger vehicles don’t try to run you over, and pickup trucks are currently all the rage. What isn’t that great is the gas mileage. Consumer Reports revealed there are only two pickup trucks with a combined gas mileage that tops 20 mpg.
The 2022 Ford Maverick truck squeaked by
The 2022 Ford Maverick may not be more beloved than the legendary F-150, but it’s quickly gaining popularity amongst pickup truck lovers. However, as gas prices continue to hit historic highs, having a vehicle that gets more than 20 mpg is extremely important, and the Maverick is gaining more attention because its fuel mileage is pretty stellar for a pickup.
According to Consumer Reports, the Maverick gets 16 mpg city, 32 highway, and 23 overall. Given the price range of $19,995 – $25,860, this isn’t a bad deal, especially for a pickup truck.
Consumer Reports liked the Maverick so much that the review site ranked it number two out of nine pickup trucks. However, there’s one truck with a better fuel mileage than the Maverick.
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz has the best fuel mileage
At first glance, the 2022 Santa Cruz doesn’t exactly look like a traditional pickup truck. That’s because Hyundai is trying to go for an SUV/pickup truck crossover. Whether this works out remains to be seen, but the superior gas mileage helps the Santa Cruz stand out from the crowd.
While Consumer Reports only ranked the Hyundai Santa Cruise in fourth place, it does have the top gas mileage. The 2022 Santa Cruz gets 16 mpg city, 34 highway, and 24 overall.
Even so, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Cruz has a relatively affordable price. It starts at $24,440 and tops out at $40,170. It also has a relatively short bed for a truck, making it less than ideal for anyone who needs to haul large loads.
Two beloved trucks have the worst fuel economy of all
Regarding pickup trucks, the 2022 Ford F-250 and the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic are probably at the top of many consumers’ wish lists. That isn’t because of the fuel economy, however.
The 2022 Ford F-250 gets 10 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and a mere 15 mpg overall. Despite this, it remains the ideal work truck and looks insanely tough, which helped earn it a rank of third place with Consumer Reports. With a price of $37,895 to $88,530, it’s well beyond the price range of many consumers before they factor in gas prices. If you can afford it, the F-250 remains a great choice, however.
The 2022 Ram 1500 Classic has a superior highway mileage compared to the F-250, but it’s close. The 1500 Classic gets 10 mpg city, 21 mpg highway, and 15 overall.
Despite its fandom, Consumer Reports wasn’t over the moon about the Ram 1500 Classic and ranked it seven out of nine pickup trucks. Even so, there weren’t a lot of complaints outside of the height.
We would be remiss not to point out that the review site was wowed by the fact that the EcoDiesel V6 gets 20 mpg overall, which gives the Ram 1500 Classic the best fuel range in the full-size pickup division. With a price range of $29,515 to $46,935, the Ram 1500 Classic might be worth considering depending on your needs and budget.
