There are several reasons why police may initiate a traffic stop. This happened to a man in North Carolina recently, and he escalated the situation. Authorities later learned that he had also committed car theft and that he was driving while under the influence. Now, the man is facing several charges, some related to his high-speed chase and others stemming from previous crimes.

This man did much more than try to run from a traffic stop

According to CBS 17, police arrested a man, Victor Alfonso Elvira-Tapia, 29, on April 14th in North Carolina. This occurred after he committed car theft on a Ford F-150 and then evaded a police traffic stop for as long as he could. Of course, as mentioned, this means he led the officers on a high-speed chase before they could arrest him.

So, what exactly happened? The reason for the traffic stop is unclear, but the report states that at some point, he was found to be driving 100 miles per hour in a 55 mph zone. Additionally, he tried to “ram over” a police vehicle. This makes his instance of car theft even worse as it’s now coupled with other charges. Notably, he has seven charges from this interaction with the police. As mentioned, he also had an open beer, which means he was driving while under the influence. They include:

  • Felony flee to elude arrest with a motor vehicle
  • Felony possession of a stolen motor vehicle
  • Fail to heed a light or a siren
  • Driving while impaired
  • Misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon
  • Open container alcohol violation
  • Misdemeanor speeding

Unfortunately, the 29-year-old man’s life of crime doesn’t begin with fleeing this traffic stop in Durham. He also has warrants from other counties. For starters, he was wanted out of Granville County for assault with a deadly weapon, car theft(grand larceny), etc. Apparently, he had shot a man and stolen a dump trailer. He also has charges out of Orange County for stealing a car and a woman’s purse. The report states that he also committed crimes in Wake County by stealing over $ 2,000 worth of batteries from a Walmart. Because of this, it’s reasonable to assume he’ll get a pretty harsh sentence.
