Getting traffic citations is never fun, regardless of whether they’re for speeding or some other road violation. Sometimes, drivers feel that the tickets that result from police traffic stops are undeserved, even if they can’t prove it. Recently, one well-known lawyer took to social media and revealed a completely legal way for drivers to get out of paying their citations.

Drivers may not have to pay for their traffic citations if they do this one thing

Millions of drivers get traffic citations each year. As mentioned, police issue these during traffic stops for things like speed, illegal lane changes, etc. These citations can be expensive, and some drivers may not be able to afford them. Additionally, some may feel that they were innocent. Recently, Lawyer Kevin Kennedy took to his TikTok account to share that drivers may have some recourse.

Drivers are usually issued a court date for traffic citations. However, many people just pay the ticket instead of going to court. According to Kevin, if they show up to court and the police officer doesn’t, they should ask the judge to dismiss the case. He says they often will in these circumstances. The lawyer went on to say that drivers should request a continuance instead of showing up to the first court date offered.

The man goes on to say that people should ask for a continuance for their traffic citation hearing because the officer is more likely to show up to the original court date. However, if the judge pushes back the court appearance, the officer often won’t come to court, making it easier for the judge to dismiss the case. Naturally, the best course of action is not to speed or commit other road violations in the first place.
