Cities around the country are looking for new ways to enforce road rules. Of course, police traffic stops are a tried and true method. However, more areas are embracing the use of traffic cams. Now, this has proven successful in Washington, DC, as the city has reportedly brought in $60 million in a matter of months thanks to red light traffic cams. Now, officials are adding even more.

DC is adding even more traffic cams to assist with traffic stops

Police officers conduct many traffic stops in order to keep the roads safe. However, many cities realize that using traffic cams allows police officers to focus on other crimes. Now, according to ABC News 7, D.C.’s new automatic traffic enforcement program has been a success so far. Notably, the city’s use of red light traffic cameras has brought in $60 million in revenue over the last few months alone.

Of course, some of the reported $60 million comes from traditional police traffic stops. However, the majority of the income comes from traffic cams. Now, the city has even added four new cameras, as the previous ones have successfully cut down the number of traffic infractions. As is the case in other cities, D.C. started by giving drivers warnings but then began issuing hefty fines.

D.C. has about 500 traffic cameras in total, which is significantly more than the city started with in 2024. Notably, the city has brought in about $113 million in revenue since 2022 from traffic fines. The report also says that more than 95% of traffic citations in the city come from cameras.
