Most Toyota RAV4 owners don’t know about a nifty trunk feature
The reactions and comments speak volumes to a quick tip about an often-overlooked Toyota RAV4 feature: “You’re kidding me?! I’ve had my Rav4 for 6 years and never knew…” “I did not know this!” “OMG thank you!” Many owners just take the trunk’s retractable privacy cover out of the car and put it somewhere in their homes. But a TikTok from December explaining where the cover actually goes clocked more than 600,000 views. At this point, it has hundreds of comments, too, and dozens of them are drivers expressing gratitude for the video’s insightful tip.
Many SUVs, including the RAV4, come with a factory-provided removable privacy cover for the trunk
Much like a plastic curtain, the rod sits clipped into the trunk’s side panels, right behind the back passenger seats. The driver can grab the cover’s handle and pull it across the trunk, clipping the front of the cover into another set of panel slots near the hatch door.
However, if you find the cover gets in the way of whatever you’re hauling, you can simply pop the whole thing out of its slots and just take it out of the trunk entirely.
“Mine has been in my guest closet for like 2 years,” one owner confirms. Others toss it in their garage when they don’t need it.
These privacy covers have a special storage compartment in the trunk
AndreDrives (@andredrives) posted that Toyota actually designed a specific spot for the cover right inside the RAV4’s trunk if you don’t need it.
Pull up the floor panel that houses the spare. You’ll notice two thin, removable square panels on either side of the spare. Pop those off. The panels hide slots for the cover rod ends. Place the cover assembly into the slots and press the ends into place. Reinstall the square panels and flip the floor covering back down. Ta-da!
While some point out that if you’d just read your RAV4 owner’s manual, you’d know about the compartment. But who has time for that? This is what #CarTok is for.
