While the 2022 Toyota RAV4 has been one of the most popular SUVs for years, the 2022 Ford Maverick is coming in for a slice of the pie. Popular SUV models such as the RAV4 and Honda CR-V need to watch their backs.

According to Torque News, 80 percent of Maverick customers are first-time truck buyers, while top conquests are coming from the RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Civic. The Maverick could be stealing customers for years.

First-time buyers, including truck owners, tend to return to the brand where they made their first purchase. J.D.Power shared that 64 percent of Ford truck buyers return for a new Ford truck when they shop.

Ford has the highest customer loyalty rate, so Maverick buyers could be locked in. It could lead to more Ford purchases.

Why is the Maverick so popular?

Mike Levine, Director of North America Product Communications for Ford Motor Company, shared that most Ford Maverick orders came from Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V owners.

This isn’t a surprise, as the RAV4 Hybrid and CR-V Hybrid are excellent options with exceptional reputations. However, the 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid takes things a step further by having a truck bed.

The Maverick offers nearly the same amount of cargo and passenger space as the RAV4 and CR-V while providing more utility. Plus, each model comes with a spare tire, which is something the CR-V doesn’t offer.

Levine shared that the Honda Civic offers unique competition. It serves as an affordable entry-level sedan and hatchback with an excellent performance. It’s one heck of a deal, like the new Ford Maverick.

Those who want to upgrade from the Civic to something larger could be disappointed by the rising costs of trucks and SUVs. Both the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are rapidly climbing in price.

The 2023 Ford Maverick Hybrid starts at $22,195, while the RAV4 Hybrid costs $29,575, and the CR-V Hybrid rings in at $33,695.

With the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, you get an EPA-estimated 41 mpg on the highway and up to 38 mpg on the highway. It uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors to provide 219 hp and 163 lb-ft of torque.

The RAV4 Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 7.1 seconds. It can tow up to 1,750 lbs, which is only 250 lbs less than the Maverick Hybrid.

The Maverick is new, practical, and affordable. The Toyota RAV4 will have to make a few improvements to steal its customers’ back.
