Many companies around the country specialize in towing vehicles. Of course, the vast majority of these tow truck companies do this practice legally. However, some go against the rules and carry off people’s cars and trucks when they’re not supposed to. This happened in Colorado, and now the company has a massive judgment against it and will soon be mailing more than 5,000 checks to victims.

Illegally towing vehicles has massive consequences

Towing vehicles is pretty standard in cities around the country. This practice helps enforce parking rules and ensures customers of local businesses have somewhere to park. However, according to KDVR 31, Wyatt’s Towing North is in hot water and owes a hefty settlement after illegally towing vehicles between 2020 and 2023.

This settlement comes after Attorney General Phil Weiser opened an investigation into the company. The investigation showed that the Colorado-based company had been towing vehicles without a license, collecting fees when they shouldn’t have been, and using deceptive business practices.

Notably, the company also sold some of the vehicles it carried away without allowing owners to pay fees to retrieve them. Now, it owes a settlement totaling $1 million. Of course, a portion of that will go to the more than 5,000 restitution checks the company must mail to impacted vehicle owners.

The attorney general announced the settlement checks on November 7th. At the time, he stated that they would be mailed out in the coming days. Notably, some residents will get two checks, with the second arriving sometime in January. Of course, other cities are also cracking down on companies illegally towing vehicles.
