Wait, what? Do any car companies even sell cars anymore? Are cars becoming more popular than SUVs all of the sudden? All we know is that the two fastest-selling vehicles in February 2021 were cars. All two of them; the Corvette and Lexus IS 350.

We keep being told that cars are dead

We keep being told that cars are dead and SUVs are what the buyers want. So the latest breakdown of February 2021 sales showing the top three vehicles sold are all cars leaves us puzzled. According to iSeeCars, the number one fastest-selling vehicle is the Chevy Corvette. It is followed by the Lexus IS 350. Number three is the first SUV, the Lexus RX 450h.

We get why the Corvette is a fast-seller. Pent up demand, short supply, and pre-orders selling out the first year’s shortened production. These are all contributing factors for it being at the top of the heap. But the Lexus IS 350? What’s up with that?

True, it is a decent sports sedan if maybe a wee bit small for some. But it has been around for a few years. Why is it so hot all of the sudden? Especially, in a segment where the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes C-Class, and Audi A4 are not selling particularly well.

The current IS came out in 2020 so it’s not a first-year model

Maybe it is the F Sport Performance model. Though an expensive small car at $60,000 it rocks a 5.0-liter V8 with 472 hp. Big engine, small sedan, equals fun times. We get that. But it is not a new version. The current IS came out in 2020.

All the remaining Top 15 vehicles are SUVs or pickup trucks. None of that is surprising given that SUVs have such a strong following. It is a makeup of both crossovers and body-on-frame vehicles.

But at number 17 another Lexus IS pops up, this one the IS 300. So the top three fastest-selling cars are Corvette and then two Lexus IS models. That’s pretty impressive with no Toyota, Nissan, BMW, Audi, or Mercedes anywhere to be found.

There are no other sedans in the Top 20 vehicles

You could say that the fastest-selling sedan is the Lexus IS by far. There are no other sedans in the Top 20 vehicles. Whether it is the best or the safest or ?? is up to the buyer. But in a black and white context, this is the sedan that is selling the fastest.

And it has to be a little worrying to BMW and Audi since the 3 Series and A4 respectively have always been considered the leaders in the small sedan category.
