As one can imagine, battery problems are a significant reason why a car or SUV won’t start. In fact, it’s usually the main reason. Luckily, you can often jump off or charge the battery. Of course, there are a few main reasons your battery could die. 

  • You left the lights or something electrical on in the car, and it drained the battery.
  • It’s been a while since the car has been driven.
  • There is a problem with one or some of the battery components. 

Problems with the starter might be why your car or SUV won’t start

One of the biggest reasons your vehicle may not start could be due to the starter. Also called the starter motor, this device is connected to the battery. This is one of the most important mechanisms for turning the ignition or pressing the engine start button. A mechanic will typically need to evaluate the situation, but a clicking noise is common with starter issues. 

Issues with the fuel system 

Fuel system issues can be another reason your SUV won’t start. Unfortunately, this can be rather complicated because of a few related problems. This may not be as simple as having bad gas in your vehicle. It could be a faulty fuel pump, or there could also be a blockage somewhere. This is another one that will require a mechanic. 

Various engine problems 

As expected, problems with the engine can also make your SUV not start. Engine problems could be a host of things, but most commonly, it’s the crankshaft. According to RepairPal, the crankshaft is one of the most essential parts of an engine. Timing belts and chains can also be another reason your SUV won’t start. There could also be engine intake issues. Sputtering or the existence of whining noises are signs of intake problems problems. 

Alternator

Your alternator could be another reason your car won’t start. The car alternator is vital because it produces the energy for things like the lights, heater, and radio. However, more importantly, it charges the battery while the vehicle runs.

Spark plugs 

Problems with the spark plugs are a primary reason why your car or SUV won’t start. Spark plugs are usually inexpensive, and many people can change them themselves. No one wants car problems, but a vehicle not starting due to old spark plugs is more welcome than some more severe problems. 

Of course, it’s difficult to diagnose the reason your SUV won’t start. However, these are the most common car problems that could cause it not to run. Hopefully, knowing them will help make the process of getting the vehicle fixed easier.
