Only Three 2022 Full-Size Pickup Trucks Are Very Quiet in Consumer Reports Noise Tests

When evaluating a pickup truck, things that one typically considers are engine options, utility features, towing and payload capacities, and off-road capabilities. However, it’s also nice to have a pickup truck that provides a quiet ride. In its noise tests, Consumer Reports ranks only three full-size trucks for having very quiet interiors.

2022 Ram 1500, Ram 1500 Classic, and Ford F-150 are very quiet, says Consumer Reports

For its noise rating, Consumer Reports rates pickup trucks on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being the noisiest and 5 being the quietest. The organization bases its noise analysis on the “expert judgment of the vehicle’s interior noise level in everyday driving.”

The only three full-size pickup trucks that earned a perfect 5/5 score for noise are the 2022 Ram 1500, 2022 Ram 1500 Classic, and 2022 Ford F-150. Here are the results of the 2022 model year trucks that Consumer Reports tested for noise:

  • Ram 1500: 5/5
  • Ram 1500 Classic: 5/5
  • Ford F-150: 5/5
  • Nissan Titan: 4/5
  • GMC Sierra 1500: 4/5
  • Chevy Silverado 1500: 3/5
  • Ford F-250: 3/5

Something to keep in mind about these noise evaluations, though, is that Consumer Reports did not yet do noise evaluations for electric pickup trucks, such as the Rivian R1T and Ford F-150 Lightning. Electric vehicles typically are much quieter than gas-powered vehicles.

Why do the 2022 Ram 1500, Ram 1500 Classic, and Ford F-150 have quiet interiors?

In its road test report, Consumer Reports explained why it rated the 2022 Ram 1500, 2022 Ram 1500 Classic, and 2022 Ford F-150 so well for low noise levels. The organization states that the 2022 Ram 1500’s “interior is quieter than some luxury cars’ cabins.” It also stated that “the truck is noticeably free of road and wind noise, and the pleasant engine hum plays in the distance.”

For the 2022 Ram 1500 Classic, Consumer Reports stated, “This truck may be Ram-tough, but it’s the strong, silent type. It’s as tranquil inside as the impressive Chrysler 300. Even its stocky body and elephant-ear mirrors transmit little wind noise inside; road noise is next to nonexistent. The eight-speed transmission keeps engine noise at bay on the highway, yet allows a symphonic V8 rumble any time you prod the throttle.”

In its noise evaluation of the 2022 Ford F-150, Consumer Reports stated, “Whether in the XLT or the Lariat hybrid, the F-150’s cabin is quiet enough to shame some luxury cars. There’s very little road noise and only some minor wind rustling from the big side mirrors at highway speeds. The XLT’s 2.7-liter turbo V6 delivers a smooth, carlike hum, though some might miss the muscular V8 growl found in competitor trucks.”

Which full-size pickup truck has the noisiest interior?

The 2022 Ford F-250 heavy-duty truck is the only full-size pickup truck that received a Consumer Reports noise rating of 3/5. It’s important to note, though, that as of this writing, Consumer Reports didn’t complete 2022 model year noise evaluations for other heavy-duty trucks. This includes the Ford F-350, Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD/3500HD, GMC Sierra 2500HD/3500HD, Ram 2500/3500, and Nissan Titan XD. Also, the lower noise rating for the F-250 is due to its diesel engine. Most heavy-duty trucks offer diesel engines, which are typically noisier than gas-powered ones.

Do you place a premium on a quiet interior for a pickup truck? If so, then you can buy the 2022 Ram 1500, 2022 Ram 1500 Classic, or the 2022 Ford F-150.
