Thinking of Toyota, the more popular models like the Camry and Corolla probably come to mind. If you love the older generation of Fast and Furious cars or even modern remakes, you might even think about the Supra. Chances are, words like race car or performance never came to mind. Well, with the new Toyota GR Super Sport, the car manufacturer might be dabbling their way into the world of supercars.

The original concept

The original concept design for the Toyota GR Super Sport first took the stage in 2018 to make its grand debut. While it’s been two years since the new supercar concept was revealed at the Toyko Auto Salon, it seems that many people still haven’t heard of it.

In fact, the car itself seemed to have been completely brushed under the rug in just a handful of years. Most people didn’t pay much mind to the concept when it was originally released, and they haven’t given it a ton of thought since then. The idea of Toyota might not live up to the expectations we have for more renowned supercar companies like Bugatti and Lamborghini, and the GR Super Sport isn’t like the rest of the Toyota cars.

Some surprising performance from Toyota

The company overall might be more popular for its consumer cars, but the company is no stranger to performance. The new GR Super Sport drivetrain will leave you feeling anything but disappointed. The hybrid powertrain it comes equipped with lives up to a lot of modern expectations, showing that Toyota is jumping headfirst into the supercar competition.

Not only is the car a hybrid, it also boasts a 2.4-liter V6 engine that is enhanced by twin turbochargers. With the drivetrain alone the car sounds great on paper, and it is expected to make around 986hp. Just shy of a thousand horsepower in prototype, there is no stopping the development team from creating an impressive supercar.

Still a prototype

What we know from the prototype of the Toyota GR Super Sport is that it will provide impressive performance. With that being said, prototypes aren’t typically an exact example of what the full production model will provide. With changes in appearance and possibly drivetrain, only the reveal of the production model will tell us exactly what we will get with the release of this new unsuspecting supercar.

If you’re a Toyota fan or just like to keep up with the ever-evolving world of supercars and hypercars, the GR Super Sport is promising so far. As we patiently — or not so patiently — await the release of the full production model, we can allow our imaginations to run wild. If there is one thing that we know for sure based on the prototype and concept designs, it’s that this new supercar won’t disappoint.
