The World’s 10 Quickest Mid-Size Sedans

Jaguar XFR-S

Sedans: not just for hauling the kids around.

The mid-size sedan market is littered with incredibly quick cars, capable of incredible speeds and blistering sprinting abilities. While the world’s top performing cars are usually reserved for the coupe segment, there are still several sedans that make noise on the world’s stage. Some automakers produce sedans that are incredibly efficient and economical, while others instead have decided to focus on making street beasts, built for speed and performance.

We’re taking a look at the quickest mid-size sedans in the world, ranked by their acceleration time from zero to 60 miles per hour. Performance stats were taken from vehicle manufacturers when available, or from other trustworthy automotive publications that have done testing on their own.

While there are some of the usual suspects and names we should all be familiar with, there may be a surprise or two waiting among the top ten. Read on to see the world’s quickest mid-size sedans. We considered the likes of Audi’s A7/S7/RS 7 and BMW’s M6 Gran Coupe to be in the sedan family, since they don’t exactly fit well into other categories.

10. Audi S6

Audi is no stranger to quick sedans, and the S6 is one of the quickest the world has ever seen. Although the S7 comes up short in terms of top speed as compared to some of its competitors at 190 miles per hour, it truly shines in the 0-60 sprint, which it can accomplish in 4.5 seconds. It gets there with the help of a twin-turbocharged V8 engine that lays down a walloping 420 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque.

9. Jaguar XFR-S

With a blistering top speed of 186 miles per hour and a searing spring from 0-60 in just 4.4 seconds, Jaguar’s XFR-S breaks the top ten of the fastest mid-size sedans in the world. The XFR-S is propelled by an extremely powerful 5.0-liter V8 engine, crafting 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This model is one of the fastest Jaguar units to ever hit the road, and has quickly won over Jag purists with its incredible speed and sleek, stylish aesthetics.

8. BMW M5

BMW’s M5, one of the most popular luxury sedans in the segment, can make the 0-60 haul in 4.2 seconds (with the 7-speed M double clutch transmission), and can hit a overall top speed at that’s limited to 155 miles per hour. It can also kick out 502 horses, along with 452 pound-feet of torque, which comes up just short of its bigger brother. For those who love the racing strip, the M5 can hit the quarter-mile mark in 11.9 seconds, putting it up among the fastest muscle cars on the road as well as sedans. The M5 is quick, but the Germans aren’t through on this list yet.

7. BMW M6 Gran Coupe

BMW makes some incredibly quick cars, and among the quickest is the M6, specifically the Gran Coupe edition. Though it’s slapped with the ‘coupe’ moniker, this M6 is a four-door monster, which can reach top speeds that are limited to 160 miles per hour, but can make the 0-60 trip in 4.1 seconds. The Gran Coupe is outfitted with a twin-turbocharged V8 engine, producing 560 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. The Gran Coupe is a finely tuned performance machine, and outshines the M5 by the slimmest of margins.

6. Cadillac CTS-V

Surprise, surprise — Cadillac is back. The CTS-V, the sleekest and sexiest perhaps of the entire Cadillac lineup, can jet to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in only 3.9 seconds. The CTS-V comes in a coupe variant in addition to a sedan, both of which put up tremendous performance figures. The sedan uses a 556 horsepower V8 engine that comes supercharged and displaces 6.2 liters. Horsepower isn’t the only thing on tap, as the CTS-V can also lay down 551 pound-feet of torque.

5. Mercedes CLS63 AMG

Mercedes-Benz’s CLS63 AMG is a true example of what it takes to successfully blend luxury into a mid-size sedan. The CLS63 AMG can hit a top speed in the neighborhood of 185 miles per hour — impressive by an measure — and can also make the dash from 0-60 in just 3.7 seconds. Powered by a 5.5-liter V8 engine, this Benz can put out a downright beastly 550 horsepower. It’s quite a bit more than you’ll need for the standard commute or even weekend getaway, but this Mercedes variant can keep up with the best of them. The CLS63 AMG really walks the line between coupe and sedan, but all things considered, we’re counting this four-door animal in the sedan category.

4. Mercedes E63 AMG

The Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG comes close to the title of the world’s fastest sedan, but no cigar. It’s hard to believe that performance stats that include a top speed of 186 miles per hour, along with a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds isn’t enough to win out. But alas, the E63 AMG is only second best. This Mercedes houses a 5.5-liter V8 engine that can produce 550 horsepower and 531 pound-feet of torque. Needless to say, it packs a hell of a punch.

3. Audi RS 7

Claiming the title as the fastest Audi sedan in all the land is the RS 7, although it may straddle the line between mid-size, full-size, and sports sedan. Getting to 60 miles per hour gets done in a snap — just 3.7 seconds — on its way to reaching the summit of its speed at 190 miles per hour. Yes, other sedans can hit faster top speeds, but the RS 7 reaches 60 miles per hour quicker than all of them. A 4.0-liter V8 engine churns out 560 horsepower, which is enough to outpace Audi’s V10-powered R8. When it comes to mid-size sedans, none are quicker than the RS 7.

2. Dodge Charger Hellcat

The recently unveiled fastest muscle car of all time, the Dodge Charger Hellcat, not only puts all other muscle cars to shame, but almost all sedans as well. The Hellcat is an absolute beast on the road, reaching a top speed of 204 miles per hour and hitting 60 in just 3.7 seconds, by Road and Track‘s testing data. Those marks tie it with the M5, but what puts the Hellcat over the top is in overall power. A monstrous V8 engine makes more than 700 horsepower, making the Hellcat the most powerful sedan on the road.
