So, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid doesn’t just get a slightly better fuel economy. It achieves up to 8 miles per gallon more than the second-place option. However, the 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid does start around $38k, making it a more expensive family option.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid has a 2.5-liter inline-four engine paired with two electric motors. It provides 243 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 3,500 lb. One motor charges the battery while the other works with the gas engine. 

This isn’t a plug-in hybrid option, so don’t worry about charging it. That adds an extra level of convenience. Also, the Toyota Highlander Hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph, making it pretty fast for a three-row SUV.

Front-wheel drive is standard, but you can upgrade to all-wheel-drive with the Highlander Hybrid. While the AWD system will help you traverse through snow and slippery conditions, it decreases fuel efficiency by two mpg.

The 2020 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is noted for being a little cramped. There is 16 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third-row of seats, and only up to 84.3 cubic feet of cargo space total. The third row has received negative reviews for feeling small, so make sure your shortest children sit back there. The second row still has plenty of space for adults.

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid has a nicer interior than the 2019 model. It’s noted for being more comfortable and crafted with higher quality materials to provide a luxurious feel. You can also opt for captain chairs in the second row. 

In terms of tech, the Toyota Highlander has a standard 8” infotainment center that can connect to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. You can upgrade to the 21.3” infotainment center and pay for a Sirius XM radio subscription too.

The base model Toyota Highlander Hybrid comes with automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, rear-cross traffic alert, and more. The Toyota Highlander is smart, capable, and efficient, but it could have a better towing capability and more space for families.
