Wait, what? A new Subaru EV is on the way? Yes, the 2022 Electric Subaru will be here soon, and it will be powered by Toyota. Sneak peeks show an incredibly confident look that could change the way people think about Subieville.

The 2022 Subaru EV is coming

According to Torque News, Subaru and Toyota are collaborating to build an all-new electric SUV. Based on the photos we’ve seen, the new Subaru EV looks like a Crosstrek, and Toyota C-HR had a baby, but in a good way.

This is actually a pretty good way to describe it because the new EV SUV will have Subaru’s core values will featuring technology from Toyota. The EV will use Toyota’s battery technology, which could include a solid-state battery pack.

Solid-slate batteries are the same size as traditional lithium-ion batteries, but they have a faster charging rate and can offer more range. But unfortunately, Toyota hasn’t released the specs in terms of power, range, charging times, and more.

What do we know about the Subaru EV?

The Electric Subaru will incorporate classic values that fans love, including an emphasis on safety, the ability to handle weather from each season, being off-road ready, being fun to drive, and it will have a low center of gravity.

According to Top Gear, the all-electric SUV will be a mid-size option that’s similar in size to the Forester. Plus, it will ride on the new Toyota e-TNGA modular platform. It’s expected to be nimble for easy commuting in the city but also off-roading capable.

The Subaru EV will come with standard all-wheel-drive and may use a Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters for a sporty experience. It’s also possible that a lowered priced version with front-wheel-drive will be available too.

If an off-roader model comes out, it will feature extra ground clearance and dual-function X-Mode that includes modes for snow, mud, and more. It also already has a rugged, off-roading look that caught our eyes.

Toyota says the first car that will ride on the new platform has already been developed and is being prepared for production. This could mean that a similar vehicle to the new Subaru EV may come out first. However, the 2022 Electric Subaru should arrive by the end of the summer.

What about the 2021 Subaru Forester?

The idea of a new Subaru Forester EV is exciting, but if you don’t want to wait, you can check out the gas-powered version. It has an MSRP of $24,795, making it an economical option. Plus, while it’s not an electric vehicle, it still gets an EPA estimated 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway.

The 2021 Subaru Forester has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. A new 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine is on the way, but it only provides 175 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque.

It comes with standard all-wheel-drive and has 8.7-inches of ground clearance. X-mode includes trail capability and hill descent control. But it’s not exactly sporty. Edmunds noted that it took 9.3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph.
