Really, Lucid? You think that painting one of your giant $90,000 rolling pieces of sculpture in flat black paint with make it more stealthy? Fat chance. In fact, we’re willing to bet it’ll make a Lucid Air sedan stand out even more in a sea of white Camrys and red Accords.

Lucid is jumping into the flat-black-car trend with a new Air package called the Stealth Appearance. While we don’t actually think it will make the car any stealthier, we do think it’s another sign that Lucid wants to be seen as the anti-Tesla electric car company.

Lucid Group’s Air is one of the hottest electric cars on the market. But, as with any premium car, buyers want customization options. In this case, for $3,000 you can add the Stealth Appearance package to the Air Grand Touring and Air Touring sedans. This means Lucid Air’s are joining the army of blacked-out Dodge Chargers and Kia Nightfalls.

The Stealth Package alters 25 components of the exterior of the car. Mainly, that means they’re painted in flat black paint, instead of the platinum color of regular Airs. The glass roof is framed by black, as well as the lower body trim, and the trim around the headlights and the taillights. For the car’s 20 and 21-inch wheels, you get new inserts. The package does come on colors other than black, though that’s an option. You can order it on white, silver, grey and red cars.

If you haven’t heard of the Lucid Air, don’t feel bad. The Air is the first car from Lucid, a startup car manufacturer based in California. The company’s CEO came from Tesla, and it has set its sights squarely on the beating Elon Musk’s car company. It got a $1 billion investment in cash in 2019 and expects to build 400,000 cars annually.

The Air is the company’s first car, and it’s quickly earning praise. It starts at about $90,000 and has a 516-mile range, effectively crushing any range anxiety anyone may have. Inside, it has all the luxury features and soft-touch materials you could wish for. If you upgrade to the Sapphire model, however, hold on: it makes 1,200 horsepower and can accelerate to 60 mph in just 2.0 seconds. It not just fast on the road, it’s the fastest-charging EV on the market, too.

The Lucid Air was recently named the World Luxury Car

The World Car Awards, presented at the 2023 New York Auto Show last week, recognized the Air as the World Luxury Car. It beat standouts like the new 2023 BMW 7 Series and the Genesis G90 for the honor. That came on the heels of the car winning MotorTrend’s prestigious Car of the Year for 2022 award.

The Lucid Air competes with other top luxury electric cars like the Mercedes EQS and the Tesla Model S. Unlike those cars, though, the Lucid seems to be capturing imaginations as a new type of electric car that brings EV style, but tons of speed and a long 516-mile range, to the class.
