Electric winches and what they can do

Getting stuck is a given when you off-road. A strap can be helpful but it’s no substitute for a winch. If you commonly travel more than just dirt roads, a winch is highly useful. Vehicles with flexible suspensions, locking differentials, and low gearing make it more likely that you’ll run into a need for one. 

A strap is no match for the pulling power of a winch when you get stuck. They often reduce the likelihood of damage to your vehicle. Using a very controlled motion in small increments, winches are precision instruments. Not only can they help you get unstuck, but they can also handle a wider variety of obstacles and trails. They usually offer a lot more cable than the average strap length.

The Super Duty Tremor’s new winch

Made by Warn, the new Ford Performance Parts winch has 12,000 pounds of winching power. It can be ordered from the factory or installed at the dealer after you’ve bought your truck for either diesel or gas Super Duty Tremor trucks.

According to Ron Meredith, the Ford truck vehicle personalization planning manager, the unique winch was designed for Ford to meet the high standards of the F-Series Super Duty. It was intended to give Ford fans another powerful tool to extend the capabilities of their Ford truck whether they were off-roading or on the job.

They looked at capability and crash safety when producing the fully integrated winch. It’s mounted behind the steel bumper of the truck to offer optimal clearance and airflow no matter which engine you have in your Super Duty truck. The winch is intended to provide an abrasion-resistant synthetic cable that has high-tensile strength. It can be used to pull nearly any rig out of the mud or snow or over whatever hindrance. It can help you pull things off the trail to clear your path.

The winch will cost $3,000 MSRP and be available beginning mid-2020 from Ford Performance Parts. It features the only wireless remote in its class. There’s also a wired remote control provision. 

The Tremor Off-Road Package

The Tremor Off-Road Package, according to Motor Trend, is available for the 2020 Ford Super Duty pickup truck and boosts its maximum towing capability up to 15,000 pounds for standard trailers. With gooseneck trailers, it has a towing capacity of 21,900 pounds with the package and the available diesel. The payload capacity is 4,210 pounds with the all-new 7.3-liter gas-powered engine enhancing the payload and towing prowess Ford fans love about their F-Series trucks.

Made for adventure or hard work, the Tremor Off-Road Package is available for King Ranch, Lariat, XLT, and Platinum F-250 and F-350 Super Duty trucks which offer a choice of the 7.3-liter gas V8 or the third generation of 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel V8.

The package gives you 35-inch all-terrain tires designed for maximum traction and real off-road prowess. The wheels are 18-inch in matte black. Tremor trucks have a 2-inch front-end lift with an air dam that’s a little shorter so there’s a good ground clearance of 10.8 inches. There’s also class-leading water fording of 33 inches. The approach and departure angles of these Super Duty models are the best ever provided at 31.65 and 24.51 degrees respectively.

There are other bells and whistles into this package like a Dana limited-slip differential in the front with a rear locking differential with an electronic shift on the go engagement. There are running boards that tuck into the body to minimize damage, FX4-sourced skid plates, and extended-axle vent tubes too. With selectable drive modes, you get the new rock-crawl mode crafted for 4×4 low.
