The Most Recalled Car Brands of 2026: NHTSA Safety Statistics Revealed

If you are tracking the most recalled car brands of 2026 and looking for the latest NHTSA vehicle recall statistics, you are not alone. With millions of vehicles already pulled back this year for mechanical failures and software bugs – we’re looking at you, Ford – staying informed about car recalls in 2026 should be an important task for every driver.

Knowing which automakers are issuing the most safety alerts and regularly running a VIN check for safety recalls is the best way to keep you and your family safe on the road.

As we move through the first quarter of 2026, the data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration looks more similar than some brands would want it to. Here is the list of the car brands with the most recalls of 2026 so far:

1. Ford

Ford is already dominating. In just the first few months, the automaker has issued 17 separate recall campaigns affecting over 7.3 million vehicles. This massive volume is largely driven by a 4.38-million-vehicle recall for faulty trailer brake lighting and a separate 1.74-million-vehicle recall for backup camera screen failures. Ford is currently on pace to rival its own record-breaking numbers from last year.

2. Toyota

Tied for the second-highest number of individual campaigns, Toyota has issued 5 safety recalls so far in 2026. While their campaign population is much lower than Ford’s, the brand shares parts across massive global production lines, which can quickly become a multiplier for these things.

3. Hyundai

Matching Toyota, Hyundai has also issued 5 recall campaigns in early 2026. The automaker continues to address various electrical and mechanical safety risks across its popular SUV lineups.

4. Nissan

Nissan earns a spot on the 2026 list primarily due to a massive single campaign. The automaker recalled over 642,000 Rogue SUVs in February to address a severe bearing defect that could lead to a sudden loss of drive power in traffic.

5. Subaru, Honda and GM

Rounding out the early 2026 list are targeted, high-priority recalls from several major brands. Subaru recalled over 71,000 Crosstrek and Forester Hybrids for fuel leak fire risks, Honda did the same with over 65,000 Prologue and ZDX EVs for failing instrument panels, and GM recalled over 43,000 full-size SUVs due to transmission control valve failures that can lock up the rear wheels.

Even with these massive recall numbers, getting the vehicles actually fixed is still a major issue. NHTSA data shows that the average recall completion rate across all manufacturers hovers around just 48%, meaning roughly half of all recalled vehicles remain unrepaired on the road today. While nearly 80% of manufacturers have a fix available within 60 days of an announcement, drivers need to make sure they push for these to be implemented.
