Honda is dedicated to providing vehicles that are both dependable and affordable, a fact that is evident as soon as you examine the automaker’s SUV lineup. Going by the base price, the Passport is the most expensive Honda SUV — and it starts at just $32,590. Comparing all of Honda’s SUVs by the highest trim level, the Black Edition Honda Pilot is the priciest at $49,920. So, what exactly can you expect from these two vehicles?

With the priciest base model of any Honda SUV, the Honda Passport is packed full of safety features and has a roomy interior. It features a 3.5-liter V6 engine that makes 280 hp, and it’s only available with front-wheel drive unless you upgrade. The Passport gets 20 miles per gallon in the city and 25 miles per gallon on the highway. It has an impressive 7.5 inches of ground clearance and a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard on this SUV, as are remote engine start, smart entry, and convenient underfloor storage compartments. The Passport also features the Sensing Suite, Honda’s collection of safety and driver assistance technologies. Standard features include adaptive cruise control, a road departure mitigation system, and electronic brake distribution.

Unlike some competitors, this SUV features rear seats that are almost equal to the front seats in terms of leg, hip, and shoulder room. The Passport can comfortably seat five adults, and the tri-zone climate control makes it possible for the driver, front passenger, and rear passengers to all set their own temperature settings.

How Reliable Is the Honda Pilot?

This Honda SUV is slightly larger than the Passport, seating seven rather than five. However, both vehicles feature the same engine and similar fuel economies.

The Black Edition Honda Pilot comes standard with all-wheel drive, and it has a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds. It boasts a large panoramic roof, black exterior trim, and black alloy wheels, giving it a striking and recognizable appearance.

Within the cabin, the Black Edition Pilot has comfortable black leather seats which are heated and ventilated. It also features a heated leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rear entertainment system, and red ambient LED lighting. With Honda’s CabinControl app, passengers are able to use their smartphones to adjust the temperature or change the music.

When the second and third row seats are folded down, this SUV offers 109 cubic feet of cargo space. It also has a hands-free power tailgate, making it easy to load up the trunk even when your hands are full.

The SUV with the most awards

While both of these vehicles are impressive, only one of them boasts the highest number of awards in Honda’s SUV lineup: the Passport. This vehicle has three honors to its name. First, it received the highest possible rating of five stars from NHTSA. In 2019, it was also in the top 10 of the Cars.com American-Made Index, a ranking that considers factors such as the use of domestic parts, assembly location, and U.S. factory employment.

Finally, in 2019, the Passport was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick. It earned a “Superior” rating in the category of front crash prevention due to its Collision Mitigation Braking System.

No matter what type of vehicle you’re looking for, the reliability and affordability of Honda SUVs is certainly eye-catching. Even the most expensive option, with its heated leather seats, extravagant features, and attractive styling, comes in at under $50,000. For a tried and true combination of dependability, comfort, and affordability, Honda’s SUV lineup is an excellent place to look.
