The Least Reliable 2021 Pickup Trucks According to Consumer Reports

Each year Consumer Reports ranks vehicles on a number of playing fields. One of the areas of judging is, of course, predicted reliability. These are the least reliable 2021 pickup trucks according to Consumer Reports.

Predicted reliability is a rating given to vehicles depending on past reliability history. In addition, owner reports from a survey are taken into consideration. Based on the information gathered, Consumer Reports gives vehicles a predicted reliability rating for how a vehicle is expected to perform.

The least reliable 2021 pickup trucks are both GM trucks

In spite of having good things about them overall, both of the outgoing GM trucks are the least reliable 2021 pickup trucks according to Consumer Reports. The 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 rank the lowest for predicted reliability. Here’s what Consumer Reports has to say.

Both the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 earn high marks for the driving experience. They earn praise for the overall driving experience as well. In fact, they both earned a 78 out of 100 in their road test. So where did these trucks go wrong? How did they earn the title of least reliable 2021 pickup trucks?

Is the 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 a good truck?

The 2021 Chevy Silverado is actually a good truck. Thousands of buyers choose this truck. It’s strong for hauling and towing. You can upgrade the cabin for more refinement. Overall, it’s a package that has some appeal. We totally get why so many people choose the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 when shopping for a pickup truck.

However, it earned only 1 out of 5 for predicted reliability from Consumer Reports. Because of this low score, the 2021 Chevy Silverado is one of the least reliable 2021 pickup trucks. Consumer Reports shows 3 recalls for this year’s Silverado model. These recalls could account for part of the low reliability score.

Additionally, if you look at the Consumer Reports reliability information for the 2021 Chevy Silverado you’ll see that this isn’t exactly a first for this pickup truck. Other model years for the Silverado are rated low too. In fact, the 2020, 2019, 2017, and 2015 model years also received a 1 out of 5 for predicted reliability. The history of a model comes into play when deciding on predicted reliability. So its past is one reason that this model is one of the least reliable 2021 pickup trucks according to consumer reports.

What about the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500?

Thinks aren’t looking great for the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 either. It’s also a good truck, but with poor predicted reliability. There are some great features on the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500. Plus, in its Denali trim GMC markets the Sierra as a premium pickup truck.

Still, the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 can’t get past its Consumer Reports predicted reliability rating of 1 out of 5. That said, while we understand that the bones of these trucks are the same. GM still gives each one special treatment. Consumer Reports rates the 2021 Silverado and the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 as the exact same truck. Not every detail is exactly the same, so we’ll let you decide if you think that these rankings are 100% fair.

So we see the same 78/100 road test score, the same 1 out of 5 reliability score, and the same 3 recalls. The ratings mirror those of the Silverado’s for many model years back. Overall, both of these trucks are worth checking out. They may be the least reliable 2021 pickup trucks according to Consumer Reports.

There are some problem spots we see for these two popular pickup truck models that help account for why they rank so low. Consumer Reports reviews a survey of over 300,000 vehicles for each model. It also reviews consumer data from previous years to make a hypothesis for the predicted reliability of any given vehicle. There are reports of recurring issues with in-car electronics and brakes (to the point of recall). Additional issues with the power equipment and transmission have also been reported, according to GM Authority.

That said, other publications such as J.D. Power rate these trucks much better. For example, J.D. Power gives the 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 a scoring of “great” or 85/100 for quality and reliability. The 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 earned a “great” as well, with 86/100 for quality and reliability from J.D. Power.

So while these trucks are the least reliable 2021 pickup trucks according to Consumer Reports, they aren’t receiving such low scores from everyone. This is a perfect example of why it’s so important to cross-reference reviews when you’re shopping for a new vehicle. Not all publications give the same verdict.
