If you’re in the market for a new SUV, there’s a lot to consider. Roadworthiness, agility, and hauling capacity are all important; however, your primary concern is probably safety. After all, SUV owners often drive under treacherous conditions, and are known for carrying their most precious cargo: their families.

As Consumer Reports notes, not only is the Ford Expedition safe, but it also achieves high marks for expected reliability and owner satisfaction. Here are a few things you should know about the Expedition’s safety ratings.

Ford Expedition safety rating

In independent testing from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), both the 2019 and 2020 Expeditions received five stars in all three crash tests. The first is a simulated front crash, which tests a vehicle’s ability to withstand a frontal collision between another vehicle when both are traveling at 35 mph. In this test, the Expedition received five stars on both the front driver and front passenger side.

The NHTSA performs two side crash tests. The first is a side pole star test, which measures how well an automobile holds up after colliding with a fixed object. The second is a side barrier test, which simulates a crash between a vehicle and a moving barrier while going 38.5 mph. In each of these tests, the Ford Expedition received five stars, for a combined side crash rating of five stars.

Rollover test results

The Expedition performed very well in rollover tests from the NHTSA as well. During a rollover resistance test, researchers determine the likelihood of a vehicle rolling over if the driver were to lose control of it.

The 2019 model performed slightly better than the 2020 one. It received a four-star rating, with a rollover risk of 19.3%. The 2020 SUV received only a three-star rating, and was given a rollover risk rating of 20.8%.

In all, the NHTSA gave both the 2019 and 2020 Expedition a five-star overall safety rating. So if you were wondering if the Ford Expedition is safe, the answer is “yes.” In fact, the Expedition has been named the safest large SUV on the market.

What safety features does the Ford Expedition have?

Just knowing that the Ford Expedition has a five-star safety rating is enough to give people confidence. However, if you were wondering how well the SUV fares when it comes to preventing accidents, you’ll probably be pleased there as well. Both the 2019 and 2020 models come with available safety features such as Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Crash Imminent Braking, and Dynamic Brake Support.

Other features of the Ford Expedition

The fact that the Ford Expedition is safe is not the only thing consumer reporting agencies love about it. As Consumer Reports notes, the recently-redesigned Expedition is lighter than previous generations, and comes with more “comfort, convenience, and optional safety features.” In particular, they note that the SUV can seat up to 8 people comfortably, even in its third-row seating.

The MAX trim model is also around a foot longer, and will provide even more cargo space behind the third row. And the second and third row seats in both the Max and regular trim models collapse at the touch of a button. This leaves an incredible amount of space for hauling things, and adds to the SUV’s versatility.

The Ford Expedition has managed to receive a perfect safety rating from the NHTSA. This is something no other vehicle in its class has yet been able to accomplish. So if you are looking for a dependable SUV that will allow you to haul passengers and cargo safely and comfortably, this model might be just what you are looking for.
