The Ford Expedition and the Chevrolet Tahoe Have Been at War for Decades

The 2021 Expedition and 2021 Tahoe are both great examples of a large family utility vehicle with three rows, and today they are each better and offer more tech and luxury than ever. But which one is better?

For decades now, we’ve seen these two SUVs at war. Much like the battle between the Ford F-150 pickup truck and Chevrolet’s Silverado, the Ford Expedition and the Chevy Tahoe are in a constant fight for the top spot. So let’s take a look at these SUVs and see if we can discern which one is actually better.

Is the Ford Expedition a good used SUV?

Yes, most owners of a used Ford Expedition would say that it’s a good used SUV. These machines are still seen driving in the wild from the first generation. For example, owner reviews of these models from as far back as 1999 say things like “even with 265,000 miles it drives like a dream.”

Another used Ford Expedition owner on Kelley Blue Book simply says their used Ford Expedition is a “very good vehicle.” Older generation Expeditions are generally good used SUV options as long as they’re purchased from a trusted source. With regular proper maintenance even the high mileage models are powerhouses. But the Chevy Tahoe is earns similar praise.

Does the Chevrolet Tahoe last long?

Siting fellow MotorBiscuit writer Allison Barfield, yes. The Chevrolet Tahoe lasts a long time. In fact, 200,000 – 300,000 miles plus isn’t unusual for a well-maintained Chevy Tahoe. Due to its longevity, the Tahoe is a good used SUV option as well.

It’s not difficult to find reviews of first generation Chevrolet Tahoe models that say things like ” I bought mine in Jan 2018 with 180,000 miles. August 2020 now have 265,000 miles.” Kelley Blue Book shows another post from a first generation owner saying “Hands down. The most reliable car I have ever owned. I bought my Tahoe new in 2001 and have never had a problem with it.” Even reviews from owners that bought a first generation model new are a testament to their potential as a good used SUV option.

Ford Expedition vs. Chevrolet Tahoe

These two large family SUVs are both good options. Even the 2021 Ford Expedition and the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe are topping lists. But which one is actually better? The answer isn’t easy. Both have a history of longevity and make good used SUV options.

The 2021 Ford Expedition is a favorite over at Edmunds and U.S. News and World Report. However, the 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe achieves a close second. Additionally, as Car and Driver points out, the new Tahoe now has the Expedition beat in terms of cargo space. Even the Expedition Max is 1 cubic feet shy of the Chevy Tahoe’s 123 cubic foot cargo capacity.

SUVs at war

As with any favored Chevy and Ford superstars, these two models are fierce competitors. In 1995, the Chevy Tahoe set the SUV scene. Ford answered with the Expedition just two years later.

Ever since the beginning, these two SUVs have been fighting each other for the top spot among large family SUV choices. Deciding which is actually better, however, keeps getting more and more difficult. It will be interesting to see if the next redesigns heat up the competition even more.
