The Dodge Durango Only Has 1 Real Advantage Over the Chevy Traverse

Families looking for a midsize SUV might be considering both the 2020 Dodge Durango and the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse. However, Kelley Blue Book points out that they occupy “two different ends of the SUV spectrum.” Here’s a look at how the two SUVs stack up against each other and the one way the Dodge Durango outshines the Chevy Traverse.

The 2020 Dodge Durango has more powertrain options than the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse

The powerful engine options are the Dodge Durango’s one big advantage. According to Kelley Blue Book, the Chevrolet Traverse has a modern platform but only a V6 engine, while the Dodge Durango has a rugged chassis and three engine options.

The 2020 Traverse has a 3.6-liter V6 and provides good handling as well. The engine produces 310 hp and 266 lb-ft of torque. However, the Traverse doesn’t have great reliability. It can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

The 2020 Durango, on the other hand, has three different engine options. That includes a 3.6-liter V6 engine and two V8 engines. Those are a 5.7-liter V8 and a 6.4-liter V8. It also has top towing capabilities for its segment. It doesn’t have great maneuverability, though, according to Kelley Blue Book. The Durango can tow up to 8,600 pounds and has 8.1 inches of ground clearance for going off-roading.

The two SUVs have different designs

The Dodge Durango and Chevy Traverse have different design aims, with one going for comfort while the other reaches for power. The 2020 Traverse has a great design for its exterior and interior. It also has lots of cargo room and storage space. The Traverse can seat eight people in its spacious three rows.

The Traverse doesn’t offer many features on its lower trims. One optional feature in the Traverse is the smart slide second-row seat, which makes it easy to reach the third-row seats. Another is the rear-view camera mirror. Using this view shows a live feed of the 180-degree view that is behind the SUV.

The Durango sports an older design with a more aggressive look. It can seat seven people in its three rows, and it also has a good amount of cargo space.

The 2020 Dodge Durango is slightly less safe than the 2020 Chevrolet Traverse

Both the Dodge Durango and Chevrolet Traverse are in the same boat regarding their offerings of advanced safety features. Along with its lack of features on lower trims, the Chevy Traverse only offers some safety features as options. The Durango also only offers some of its driver-assist safety features on higher trim levels. It does have plenty of standard basic safety features though.

Buyers who want advanced safety features will end up paying more for either of these SUVs. The Traverse has a slightly higher overall safety rating from the NHTSA – five out of five stars – as compared to the Durango’s four.

The 2020 Dodge Durango has a higher starting price than the 2020 Chevy Traverse

Both SUVs are relatively affordable. The Chevy Traverse comes in with a starting price that’s lower than that of the Dodge Durango, though. The Traverse starts at $30,995, while the Durango starts at $31,990.

These two similar-sized SUVs include a modern crossover and an older-style, more powerful SUV. The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse is an SUV that’s comfortable to drive and to ride in. It has a number of advantages, including lots of space for passengers and cargo. The 2020 Dodge Durango is a larger midsize SUV with good towing capabilities as well as off-roading abilities. Its positive features all stem from its V8 engine options, its one real advantage over the Traverse.
