The All-New BMW i3 Just Dropped, and Its 559-Mile Range Will Make Tesla Sweat

For five decades, the BMW 3 Series has been the ultimate benchmark for sport sedans. Now, the German automaker is bringing that iconic DNA into a completely new era. Arriving as the second model in the highly anticipated “Neue Klasse” lineup, the all-new, fully electric BMW i3 has officially broken cover.

If you are worried that electrification might dull the Ultimate Driving Machine, don’t be. BMW has engineered the new i3 to be a technological powerhouse, boasting nearly 470 horsepower, next-generation digital architecture, and an absolutely staggering electric range that completely redefines the segment.

559 Miles of Range and 10-Minute Charging

The biggest headline for the new BMW i3 is what lies beneath the floorboards. The sedan utilizes BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology, which completely ditches the old prismatic battery cells in favor of energy-dense cylindrical cells. Paired with a state-of-the-art 800-volt architecture, the new i3 delivers a class-shattering WLTP-estimated range of up to 900 kilometers (roughly 559 miles) on a single charge.

Range anxiety is officially dead. When you do eventually need to plug in, the 800-volt system allows the i3 to handle ultra-rapid 400 kW DC fast charging. That means you can pull up to a compatible charger and add roughly 250 miles of range in just 10 minutes. Furthermore, the i3 will feature bi-directional charging, allowing you to use the massive battery pack as a mobile power bank.

The “Heart of Joy” and 469 Horsepower

At launch, buyers will be treated to the potent BMW i3 50 xDrive variant. This model features a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup that pumps out a massive 469 horsepower and 476 lb-ft (645 Nm) of torque.

To ensure all that power translates into hallmark 3 Series handling, BMW developed a completely new digital nervous system featuring four “superbrain” high-performance computers. The most important of these is dubbed the “Heart of Joy,” which manages all driving dynamics, braking, and steering functions. According to BMW, this new superbrain responds ten times faster than previous control systems, allowing the i3 to carve corners with absolute precision.

Shark-Nose Styling and a Panoramic Cabin

Visually, the new i3 is a striking departure from the current lineup, adopting a sleek “2.5-box” silhouette with a long wheelbase and extremely short overhangs. The front end features a sporty shark-nose profile, a reimagined horizontal kidney grille, and flush-mounted door handles that automatically extend as you approach.

Inside the cabin, the physical gauge cluster is completely gone. Instead, the i3 utilizes the brand-new BMW Panoramic Vision system, which projects critical driving information directly onto a specialized coating that stretches across the entire lower windshield from A-pillar to A-pillar. This futuristic setup is paired with a 17.9-inch Central Display and a redesigned multifunction steering wheel.

Production for the new BMW i3 will officially kick off in August 2026 at Plant Munich, which has undergone a massive expansion to accommodate the new BMW Group architecture. First customer deliveries are expected to roll out by autumn.
