For new parents looking to buy a car that’s suitable for a family, safety is paramount. Modern drivers demand a lot of safety features from their cars, but those safety features on top of everything else can make the latest models very pricey.

Although there are other steps you can take besides buying the most modern car to protect your child, there are also some more affordable cars that are decked out with safety features as well. Not only that, but many of these cars were rated as some of the safest cars to drive of the year. Here are 5 of the safest used cars that have an average price of under $10,000.

2009 Acura TL 

The 2009 Acura TL was one of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) top safety picks for 2009. With a redesigned chassis, Audi claims that the 4-door Acura TL provides drivers with a safer and quieter ride than its earlier models.

It also comes with a full suite of safety features such as a 4-wheel automatic braking system (ABS), child safety locks, and an electronic stability control system. All of these features come at an average price tag of about $8,000.

2011 Audi A4

The 2011 Audi A4 was also one of the IIHS’s top safety picks, scoring well on most categories tested by them. Similar to the 2009 Acura TL, the 2011 Audi A4 has a full airbag suite, 4-wheel ABS, and child safety locks.

As a 5-seat, 4-door sedan, this car has very similar safety features to the 2009 Acura TL, though one area where the 2011 Audi A4 is superior is in its fuel economy. A used 2011 Audi A4 has an average price of about $7,500.

2011 Volvo C30

This 2-door hatchback was also an IIHS top safety pick for 2011. With 4 seats available, the 2011 Volvo C30 also has many of the safety features that the other cars on this list have. Although it doesn’t have child safety locks.

However, it was given a 10.0 safety rating by U.S. News and according to the IIHS’s safety tests. The car was given the highest rating in every category except 1, its structure and safety cage.

For that category, the 2011 Volvo C30 was rated as acceptable, the 2nd highest safety rating the IIHS gives. Depending on the model you choose, a used 2011 Volvo C30 starts at an average price of about $8,700.

2012 Toyota Prius C

The 2012 Toyota Prius C is another iteration on the famous Prius line of hybrid cars. Similar to the other cars on this list, the 2012 Prius C has safety features like a brake assist system, child safety locks, and a traction control system.

The 2012 Toyota Prius C was also a top safety pick by IIHS and it was given a 5-star safety rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With the best fuel economy of all the cars on this list, the 5-seater has an average used price of about $7,400.

2012 Kia Optima

The 2012 Kia Optima was also a car that got reviewed by the NHTSA, and it gave the 2012 Kia Optima a 5-star safety rating. Many cars don’t get reviewed by the NHTSA, but its safety reviews of the cars it does review are extra guarantees of that make and model’s safety.

Similarly, the 2012 Kia Optima was one of the IIHS’s top safety picks for 2012. The 4-door, 5-seater comes with the latest safety features, such as a 4-wheel ABS, integrated turn signal mirrors, and child safety locks. With an above-average fuel mileage, a used 2012 Kia Optima starts at an average price of about $7,800.
