Oh no, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV has less power than the truck! It only has 830 hp. We know 803 hp doesn’t make the Hummer EV SUV seem like it lacks any muscle, but it’s behind the 2022 Hummer EV pickup truck. 

Why the 2021 GMC Hummer EV SUV has less power 

According to Auto Blog, the 2022 Hummer EV truck has 1,000 hp, while the Hummer EV SUV only has 830 hp. That means the SUV is a whole 170 horses behind. For some people, that’s unacceptable. 

But at least there is a logical explanation. Al Oppenheiser, GMC EV Chief Engineer, explained that the SUV is smaller. It has a wheelbase that’s nine inches shorter than the truck’s, and it’s about 20 inches shorter overall. 

GMC was unable to fit the larger battery pack found in the truck into the smaller SUV. Without the size to handle a larger battery pack, the GMC Hummer EV SUV suffers from power loss. Although, it still has a stout 830 ponies, so don’t call it weak by any means. 

What would more power mean for the GMC Hummer EV SUV? 

If the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV has the same larger battery pack, then the battery pack layout would have to be changed. The change would come at the expense of cargo space. Also, the floor might not be able to fold flat. 

GMC engineers decided that more cargo space and utility are currently more valuable than the extra 170 hp. Also, how many other SUVs currently offer 830 hp? This amount should be plenty for most drivers, according to Oppenheiser. 

This is the first version of the Hummer SUV EV too. GMC engineers are working to push the capability of their batteries in the future to provide more power. As technology advances, the batteries should become smaller and more efficient. 

Here’s a wild surprise too. Less powerful variants of the Hummer SUV might be in the cars. When the first model launches in 2023, it will only be offered with 830 hp and a 300-mile driving range. It starts at about $105,595. 

But then, a few months later, GMC will release the GMC Hummer EV SUV EV2X model. This variant will have up to 625 hp and a similar driving range. It should start at about $89,995 before incentives. 

What can the GMC Hummer EV SUV do? 

According to Motor Trend, the 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV is a beast. It should be available with every unique feature once it rolls out. One feature known as the Extract Mode raises the suspension by six inches to help you climb over obstacles. 

The Hummer EV SUV wouldn’t be complete without the Hummer EV CrabWalk mode either, which allows the SUV to move from side to side, like a crab. This sounds pretty helpful when you need to parallel park. 

Adding the Extreme Off-road package adds about $5,000 to the price, but it comes with 18-inch wheels wrapped in 35-inch tires, underbody armor, rock sliders, a front eLocker, and heavy-duty half shafts. This package comes standard with the Edition 1 pickup too. Also, you can go for optional 37-inch tires from the dealership.
