If you want to be able to throw impromptu parties anywhere you go, this is the feature for you. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV will offer an optional tailgate stereo system built with durability and convenience in mind, GM Authority reports. Here’s everything you need to know about this fun hidden stereo.

The GMC Hummer EV’s Kicker stereo system

The 2022 GMC Hummer EV’s optional Kicker package features a 100-watt stereo system that is installed into the MultiPro tailgate. Because the rear of a pickup truck isn’t exactly the most secure place, the stereo system is specifically designed to withstand wear and tear.

The Kicker system is composed of two coaxial speakers, an amplifier, and a button panel built into the tailgate, allowing you to easily skip tracks and control the music’s volume. These components are all weatherproof, so you won’t need to worry about the system even if you’re driving through (or dancing in) the rain.

The Hummer EV isn’t the first GMC truck to feature a tailgate stereo system — you’ll also find one in the Sierra 1500. However, the Hummer EV’s system draws power in a slightly different way. While the stereo system on the Sierra runs on its own separate power supply, the system in the Hummer EV derives its power from the truck’s Ultium battery pack.

GM Authority is quick to point out that while this does mean the Kicker stereo will drain some of the battery’s power, it will not actually have too much of an impact. As the Hummer EV has a large 200 kWh battery pack, even hours of listening should have a minimal effect on the vehicle’s power.

Functional and fun

The GMC Hummer EV’s Kicker stereo system has the potential to liven up a plethora of fun events. Since you’ll always have high quality speakers with you, you’ll be able to blast your favorite tunes at tailgate parties, at the beach, or even on camping trips. Unlike with smaller portable sound systems, you won’t have to worry about running of battery or not being able to turn the volume up loud enough.

Official pricing has not yet been released for the Hummer EV’s Kicker stereo. The Sierra’s system costs $699, and GM Authority points out that the Hummer EV’s system is slightly more complex to install, indicating that it may potentially come with a higher price tag.

What to expect from the Hummer EV

Starting in the fall of 2022, the upper trim of the GMC Hummer EV will begin rolling out. This trim, called Edition 1, starts at approximately $112,595. It features a tri-motor powertrain that makes a whopping 1,000 hp, and it can reach 60 mph in just three seconds.

This trim of the Hummer EV comes standard with every extra available, including a semi-autonomous driving mode, an adjustable air suspension, and an impressively large 13.4-inch infotainment display screen. Other features include steel underbody armor and virtual rear lockers.

If you don’t want to commit to the six-figure price tag of the upper trim, don’t worry — other options will be available. The Hummer EV has two lower trim levels that don’t come standard with quite as many features. They are scheduled for release in 2023 and 2024.

Although COVID-19 has put a halt on social gatherings, it’s nice to look ahead and see the possibility of tailgate parties with friends in the coming years. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV’s Kicker stereo system — with its durable design, powerful sound, and long-lasting battery life — is a fun feature that has the potential to liven up just about any social event.
