Car-buying consumers may have their eyes on what lies ahead with 2021 model vehicles. But many automakers are already looking beyond and developing tech and designs for 2022 introductions. In fact, Genesis is already discussing some of its game-changing alterations for the 2022 Genesis G70. And it seems the automaker is taking a page from the Tesla playbook to launch an exciting new capability.

The 2019 Genesis G70 may have been named MotorTrend’s car of the year, but Genesis isn’t stopping with improvements. The popular luxury sedan is getting a facelift for 2022, along with a few other enhancements. The early designs indicate a fresh, pointier new grille and twin-bar lighting elements. But it’s not just the exterior aesthetics that are impressive. The 2022 Genesis G70 is expected to be fully capable of incorporating over-the-air updates, a technology platform that originated with Tesla.

Tesla tends to lead the way in technology

Tesla makes revolutionary electric cars, but at its core, it’s a technology company. Some of the introductions have been game-changing for the auto industry, including its over-the-air technology platform that allows cars on the road to receive software patches, connect for updates, and improve over ownership. Tesla may have been a pioneer in building vehicles ready to receive new tech as it becomes available, but it’s gaining in popularity among luxury automakers. Some of the legacy manufacturers have struggled to keep up in terms of including similar enhancements in their vehicles. But Genesis is moving the ball down the court quickly by adapting and planning to harness this updating platform for its 2022 G70 model.

How over-the-air updates work

As the new car rolls off the production line, it will already be equipped with over-the-air technology. Once you buy a vehicle with this capability, you can stay in-tune with the manufacturer recommended tech updates by simply connecting to the vehicle’s Wi-Fi. For the Tesla models, there is a ‘Software’ tab on the touchscreen that will signal if a new update is available. You can then install the upgrade immediately or schedule it for later. It’s a revolutionary technology that most of us are already used to having on our cellular devices. It only makes sense for our vehicles have software updating capabilities, too.

Interior features and tech expected for the 2022 Genesis G70

In addition to the exterior refresh and the Tesla-inspired, over-the-air update system, the 2022 Genesis G70 has more in store. The current sedan model features an 8.0-inch central display and touchscreen. The 2022 G70 will instead boast a 10.3-inch screen and entirely new software integrations for a completely enhanced, user-friendly interaction. If you thought the Genesis G70 couldn’t get any more luxurious, just wait and see what the 2022 model experience plans to offer.

Why it may be worth the wait

The 2019 and 2020 Genesis G70 models are impeccable to many already. The automaker has taken the luxury class by surprise and is outpacing the likes of BMW and Mercedes-Benz in popularity. But should you have your eye on a G70, it may be worth waiting for the 2022 model arrivals. The G70 will get a fresh new exterior style and, more importantly, a significant tech boost inside. Having over-the-air update capability means never having to make a trip to the dealership for software patches and new tech updates. That convenience alone may be worth the wait.

If you haven’t considered a Genesis G70, but prefer the luxury sedan class, you could be missing out on a true gem. The reviews already rank this car high among its competitors. And from the sounds of it, the 2022 model G70 is going to have more to brag about in terms of extras.
