The 2022 Ford Maverick is Borrowing From the Escape

Yeehaw, more information about the 2022 Ford Maverick is coming out, and it has us all excited! We just can’t hide it! That’s why we will share all the new facts with you. For example, the Ford Maverick is borrowing components from the Ford Escape.

At first, the Ford Maverick was expected to be a single cab truck with a unibody frame. But new photos reveal that it will actually be a bit bigger and possibly a little more beastly. AutoBlog shared new leaked photos discovered by the Maverick Truck Club that show a more aggressive-looking truck.

While the 2022 Ford Maverick is still hidden under camouflage, we can see the front end. You’ll notice a large grille with lights that look similar to the Ford Bronco Sport. However, the front end looks to be a little more aggressive than the Bronco Sport, which is pretty much like the Bronco-lite.

How is the Maverick related to the Bronco Sport?

But the size and look suggest that the 2022 Maverick could be related to the Bronco Sport. Sure, it has a distinct nose, but the headlights and size look related. The new Ford Maverick truck is only a little smaller than the Ford Ranger.

AutoBlog also shared a photo of the rear suspension. It shows a twist-beam style setup without a rear differential. This means that the Maverick could be a unibody truck that offers all-wheel-drive, like the Ford Escape and Bronco Sport.

These clues suggest that the Maverick will ride on the Ford Escape platform like the Bronco Sport does. The Maverick may be offered with a cheaper front-wheel-drive variant, offer AWD for off-roading, and there could be a beefier trim model for adventuring too.

Unfortunately, Ford has been pretty secretive about the Maverick so far. What if these photos are about a baby Ford Bronco pickup truck instead? That would be quite a surprise. However, most rumors point to a new Maverick truck instead.

What else do we know about the Maverick?

The Ford Ranger starts just above $26,000, so because the Maverick is smaller, it may be cheaper. Car and Driver suggest that the Ford Maverick could start around $20,000. This is because in 2019, Ford shared that their new pick up would be around that price.

Powertrain options may vary based on how committed Ford is to offering an economical option. The cheapest Escape trim has front-wheel-drive and a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that pumps out 181 hp. But the Bronco Sport has the same engine and standard AWD.

But the Bronco Sport also has a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine that pumps out 245-hp. This extra power would certainly make the Ford Maverick truck more fun.

The engine options will probably be paired with an automatic transmission and eventually gain a hybrid variant. While some fans will want a manual transmission, there’s no information that suggests it will get one.

The latest Ford Sync 4 technology should be offered along with under-seat storage cubbies that are similar to the ones found in the Bronco Sport. Also, the truck bed will most likely be smaller than the 5’4” bed found with the Honda Ridgeline. We hope to learn more information soon, and the Ford Maverick is expected to be released toward the end of 2021.
